SPORTS & LEISURE 'Dogs set for showdown By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer The Halton Hills Bulldogs and Clarington Green Gaels have met in the Ontario Lacrosse Association Jr. B playoffs the past four seasons and the East Conference rivals appear to be on a collision course again. The 15-1 Gaels are slated to visit Georgetown this Thursday to take on the 12-2 Bulldogs with home floor right through to the provincial championships at stake. Not that the extra home date in a best-of-five series is all that crucial to winning, as Halton Hills proved in last year's East final by coming back from a 2-0 deficit to claim the title with a stunning 6-4 victory in Bowmanville. The Bulldogs went on to win the Ontario crown and then the Founders Cup national championship for the first time and they'll celebrate those wins later this week with the unveiling of three banners at the Alcott Arena. The Gaels pounded a shorthanded Bulldog squad 12-5 on April 28 in the first meeting since the 2010 post-season, but coach Blaine McCauley's side hasn't lost since, accumulating 11 straight wins. Clarington's only regular-season loss came against Markham and for the most part has been pounding the opposition, with two Gaels, Dylan Goddard and Brendan Muise already reaching the 100-point mark. "The challenge for us right now is to not play with teams but to start playing our own game for a full 60 minutes and we haven't done that yet, so there's still a lot better to come for us," said captain Kody Lyons, in his fourth year with the team. "Not a lot of teams get a chance to repeat and that's our goal. Everybody wants to beat the defending champs so every team seems to play ten times harder against us. We've got something to prove again this year and I think we have the team to go for it." The 'Dogs, debuting their new home-and-away retro jerseys, collected two more victories on the weekend, squeaking past the under-manned Mississauga Tomahawks 12-10 on Friday in Port Credit before pummeling the last-place Orillia Kings 17-2 here Saturday. Halton Hills led 5-0 midway through the first period Friday against the Tommies before the hosts rallied to nearly equalize. Blake Kenny (3), Peter Laidlaw, Luke Laidlaw, Connor Sellars, Brad Kri, Jordan Dance, Seth Laidlaw and Mike MacDonald tallied for the Bulldogs. Dance (3), Kri (2), Pete Laidlaw (2), Mike MacDonald (2), Chris Haynes (2), Kenny (2), Seth Laidlaw, Michael Licata, Thomas Harding and Luke Laidlaw were the goal scorers versus Orillia. Reinforcements continue to filter into the Bulldog lineup, with Mike MacDonald back from school and the injured Michael Licata returning on the weekend. The club also signed rookie Duane Davis, whose brother Kyle starred for the 'Dogs, and made a deal with the Hamilton Bengals to acquire veteran transition player Brad Mazzocato. Davis attends Trinity-Pawling prep school in New York, while Milton resident Mazzocato had 11 goals and five assists in 14 games with Hamilton. The Bulldogs will miss the services of veteran sniper Dylan Gilbert after last year's Founders Cup overtime hero broke his ankle on May 30. Gilbert hopes to return for the playoffs, as does another key forward from the 2010 championship team, Brendan MacDonald, NEXT GENERATION N 11 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday, June 7, 2011 who's recovering from knee surgery. This week, the Bulldogs visit Mimico Wednesday to face the 3-10 Mountaineers before hosting the Gaels Thursday. On Saturday night, the banners representing last season's three championship wins will be raised in a pre-game ceremony set to start at 7:20 p.m. when the Mountaineers, who were beaten 4-3 in overtime by the `Dogs in the Founders Cup final, come to town for the third and last clash between the two this season. Andrews nets B.Sc. and a gold Although she was absent for her graduation ceremony at Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas, Georgetown's Kaitlyn Andrews was on another podium at the time, celebrating an important personal achievement. The 22-year-old Andrews recently completed her four years at the school with a Bachelor of Science degree (kinesiology major) with honours and a gold medal at the Southland Conference track & field championships in Louisiana, winning the women's shot put competition with a throw of 15.54m. Andrews also set a personal best in the discus at the conference meet with a toss of 45.87m to finish sixth, more than a metre better than her previous high mark. The Acton High School grad qualified for the NCAA West Regional meet in Eugene, Oregon in the shot put thanks to her Southland victory and recorded a throw of 15.14m to place 21st in the field of 48 athletes. She established her bestever put earlier in the spring at 15.76m. Wearing their new uniforms for the first time, the Bulldogs scored an untidy 12-10 triumph but are still riding an 11game win streak heading into Thursday's big clash with the front-running Green Gaels of Clarington. The Grade 11 student struck gold as a junior last year in the javelin and collected a silver medal in that event in his first attempt at the senior level with a throw of 61.43m, 6.14m behind the winner from Grimsby. Renton, the lone Jaguar competing at OFSAA, also placed fourth in the senior boys' shot put with a best toss of 16.22m, 1.66m shorter than the bronze medalist. In other events, Georgetown District High School's junior girls' 4x100m relay team was just fractions of a second away from qualifying for the final, placing ninth in the preliminaries. The team was comprised of Demi Swann, Rachel Inniss, Aly Young and Rebekah Kunica. Individually, Swann finished 14th in the province in the triple jump in 10.18m and 17th in the long jump with a leap of 4.56m. Georgetown's Lauren Brewster placed 13th in the midget girls' 400m.
