Competing at the 17th Skills Canada National Competition in Quebec City last week, Van Oosten joined 500 youths in more than 40 skilled trades and technology competitions as they came together to decide the best of the best. Each of the competitors had excelled in their area of study by first winning the local school competition, then the regional and provincial competitions. Van Oosten competed in the Architectural Technology & Design category, which consisted of a house design challenge with a number of criteria attached, and the competitors had to design the house to meet Gold medalist Jonathon Van Oosten proudly displays his gold medal won at the Skills Canada the needs. Trucking centre plans unveiled By CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer About dozen residents turned out to hear about a zoning change to allow a larger than usual truck distribution centre in the 401 Corridor at a special council meeting Monday. However, only two of those residents spoke about their concerns about the 95acre (38-hectare) property, which fronts Steeles Ave. and Fifth Line and is located beside the TransCanada Energy power generating station. First Gulf Corporation is developing the property for a tenant that wants to situate a distribution warehouse and logistics facility there. First Gulf executive vice-president Dave Carreiro in an interview with The Independent & Free Press yesterday (Wednesday) said he could not name the tenant due to a confidentiality agreement, but acknowledged it was a Fortune 400-based company in the retail sector. He said the project would generate $25 million in development charges for Halton Region, the Town and both school boards (DCs are used for infrastructure upgrades like roads), hundreds of thousands of dollars in planning and building permit fees and $3.5-4 million in annual taxes.
