8 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,June 14, 2011 SPORTS & LEISURE Bulldogs raise title banners, then rout Mountaineers By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer On the night they celebrated their 2010 Canadian championship, the Halton Hills Bulldogs played the part of gracious hosts a little too well-- for a while anyway. The Bulldogs raised their 2010 Ontario Jr. B Lacrosse League Eastern Conference, provincial championship and Founders Cup title banners to the rafters prior to their matchup with the Mimico Mountaineers Saturday in front of their biggest regular-season crowd so far. Almost predictably, Halton Hills was slow to get rolling and the last-place Mounties, whom the Bulldogs beat in last summer's Canadian title game in Etobicoke, took advantage, building a surprising 5-2 lead early in the second period. But the 'Dogs got down to business after that, scoring 10 consecutive goals to record a 14-7 victory. Leading scorer Blake Kenny led the offence with four goals and two assists. Connor Sellars (2), Peter Laidlaw (2), Jordan Dance (2), Seth Laidlaw, Michael Licata, Luke Laidlaw and Jamie Batten rounded out the scoring. The home side led 3-1 after one period and 6-5 late in the middle stanza before the Gaels clamped down, scoring five unanswered goals to prevail 10-5, outshooting the 'Dogs 52-32. Luke Laidlaw (2), Dance, Licata, Mike MacDonald and Kenny tallied for Halton Hills. Clarington clinched home floor for the Eastern Conference playoffs with the win. The Bulldogs and Mountaineers were tied 4-4 early in the second period last Wednesday in Mimico before the visitors broke out with six goals in six minutes, en route to a 12-7 triumph. Dance (3), Luke Laidlaw (2), Kenny (2), Chris Haynes (2), Connor Sellars, Pete Laidlaw and Duane Davis were the marksmen. Making his debut for the Bulldogs Saturday was transition player Shawn Stringer, who was acquired from Hamilton Jr. B. The 21-year-old Bengals' captain had 30 goals and 24 assists in 17 games this season. Ahead this week, the Bulldogs, who have just three games remaining on the schedule, will entertain the Oakville Buzz Thursday at 8 p.m., followed by another home date Saturday with the Newmarket Saints at 7:30 p.m. at the Alcott Arena. Despite excellent pitching from Nicole Scalia and Emily Walker, along with catcher Jamie Ruthven throwing out five Klassics trying to steal second base, the Hawks were edged 2-0. Also at the tourney, the mite Hawks settled for silver medals after a 6-4 loss to Brampton in the championship game, while the North Halton squirts made it to the semifinals before bowing out.
