`A life without love is like a year without summer.' --Swedish Proverb The smell of a steak sizzling on the barbecue, a late night walk as the crickets conduct their post-dusk concerto, an afternoon spent chilling in the pool with a cool drink in hand. Ahhhh, summer. We welcome you with open arms. After what was a wicked winter followed by a soggy spring we are hopeful Mother Nature will look upon us favourably and give us a few months of warm temperatures and cooling breezes. As always we welcome you to while away the hours perusing the latest issue of Sideroads of Halton Hills. In this edition local resident Don Ablett's continues his fascinating tale of his trip to Turkey for an archaelogical dig. Also inside is a look at the refurbished Terra Cotta Conservation Area, the Georgetown Choral Society, Sheridan Nurseries's groundbreaking "bio-pond" and our usual assortment of columnists. Enjoy the summer. --John McGhie, editor "Your Comfort is our Business" Convenient location close to business district, restaurants & shopping Inn on the Hill 365 Guelph Street Halton Hills (Georgetown) · Bright & spacious guest rooms · Complimentary continental breakfast · Free High Speed internet access www.bestwestern.com/ca/innonthehill 905-877-6986 Got a comment or story idea for Sideroads? So, on a gorgeous sunny morning we headed out to Inglewood where we slid the canoe in the river. There was enough flow that we were carried along at a good Laurent Thibault paddles the four knots and left hardly any paint on the bottom. The Credit River trick was to pay constant attention, navigate where the water was deepest, and, of course, dodge around the many boulders that we could see well ahead from the churning water. We only had to portage three times, including once just after we started where we could not paddle around a large fallen tree that had dropped across the river. The landscape along the banks varied from flat and marshy to towering cliffs of red clay just around Georgetown where the river has cut through multi-coloured deposits accumulated millions of years ago. The bird life along the river provides quite a symphony in the early spring, and judging from the many new-born chicks, the Canada goose population is thriving. About five hours later, including a lunch stop, we landed in Norval, just above the dam, and bought some fresh-baked goodies at the Italian bakery. It was a relaxing and yet exhilarating experience, and we came away with a new appreciation of what a jewel the Credit river is, right here in our back yard. We should all support efforts to protect its watershed, and preserve this beautiful natural asset for future generations to enjoy.
