Greenwell one step away from qualifying for Canadian Open Club at North Halton member Robbie Greenwell has reached the final stage of qualifying for this year's Canadian Open, to be held at the Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club in Vancouver July 21-24. The 25-year-old from Georgetown shot a twoover-par 74 at the Ontario regional qualifier last week at the Club at Bond Head to earn the 18th of 19 spots for the final qualifying round of 40 golfers on Monday, July 18 at Morgan Creek in Surrey, B.C. The top four finishers from the Monday qualifier will move on to the Canadian Open. ··· Georgetown's Jamison Cass recorded rounds of 75-79 to finish tied for third spot in the Nike Golf Junior Series Stephen Ames Cup Qualifier held at the Blue Springs Golf Club in Acton. Cass played in the boys' 15-18 division and ended up 10 over par for 36 holes and four strokes back of the winner. Chris Wilson of Georgetown was 13th in the 15-18 age group after shooting 87-75. Another local, Connor Mckenzie, tied for 17th with 8777. ··· Three Halton Hills residents took part in the 33rd Hudson Junior Invitational in Hudson, Ohio earlier this month that drew teenage golfers from across North America and Mexico. Robbie Johnson of Georgetown tied for 26th in a field of 84 competitors, carding 81-73-78. Thomas Smith placed 82nd. The 14-year-old Spencer also finished sixth in the girls' division at the Junior All-Star at Hilton Head, S.C., shooting 81-74-75 to place 10 shots out of first. ··· Joel Albany of Georgetown placed in a tie for fifth in the boys' 14-16 age group at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour's MJT Prodigy Series event at the National Pines course near Barrie. The 15-year-old Trafalgar Golf Club member shot rounds of 79-85 to finish 11 shots off the lead. Oakville's Jessica Shepley was in a confident mood Tuesday during the opening round of the CN Canadian Women's Tour event at Acton's Blue Springs Golf Club as she shot a three-under-par 69 to lead by two strokes over two other competitors. But the 28-year-old Shepley faltered in the second and final round Wednesday, dropping several shots back of the leaders, three of whom were tied at one over par late in regulation play. Final results weren't available at the Independent & Free Press deadline. Shepley has already qualified for the Canadian Open after winning the opening CN Tour stop in Squamish, B.C. in May.
