4 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, June 30, 2011 Town shows Pride The Town of Halton Hills is flying the Pride rainbow flag this week. The Town had been requested earlier this month to fly the flag in conjunction with Halton Pride annual picnic on June 4. But bad weather cancelled the event, and the request was withdrawn. The Town felt that as June is Pride Month and major centres were celebrating Pride Week, June 24-July 3, this community would fly its flag this week as well, said Town Clerk Suzanne Jones. Purse designer is hoping contest win is in the bag By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer Jennifer Burland'spurse design could land her $5,000 in prize money if she wins the Crystal Light Designer Purse Challenge. Burland, 24, a former Georgetown resident, who now lives in Toronto, designed an eye-catching pink, yellow and tangerine coloured stingray leather bag for the competition. The purse earned the Fanshawe College fashion design graduate a spot in the top eight contestants, and last week her bag was selected as one of the top four designs in the contest by a panel of judges led by supermodel Stacey McKenzie. Its now up to the public to choose which bag they like best by going to Facebook.com/CrystalLightCanada to vote for the first-ever Crystal Light Designer Purse Challenge. The contest closes August 2. The winning designer will take home $5,000, while Canadian residents who cast a vote have the chance to win one of the finalist bags filled with $1,000 worth of gifts. Earlier this spring Burland and other aspiring design students were invited to create the "ultimate handbag" based on creativity, uniqueness, feasibility of design and flavour inspiration. Burland's flavour inspiration was tangerine-grapefruit. She ordered the stingray leather online from California, and said it was a real challenge to sew. "I think I broke about 30 needles trying to sew it," said Burland. "It looks like there are beads of water all over it," said Burland. "It's functional as well." She said it holds a water bottle and three Crystal Light packets and a zipper along the bottom transforms it into a bigger bag. She was thrilled to make it into the top eight, and now final four. It's really great to get recognized for all your hard work. But I would be happy for any of the girls to win. They're really talented." Burland works as a product developer at SCKC (Super Cool Kids' Clothing), but said she hopes one day to be a designer. "I'm just not sure what my muse is yet," said Burland. In the meantime she's enjoying her work and has her own blog at www.guise.ca If she wins the Crystal Light Designer Purse Challenge she plans to pay off her school debt. The Challenge celebrates Canadian women's passion for their purses, along with one of their favourite purse accessories- water. Crystal Light is encouraging women to add flavour to their water to make hydration more enjoyable.
