Making room for everybody on the roads The arrival of warm weather means, unfortunately, an increase in road accidents, especially on small municipal streets. Motorcyclists, bicyclists, in-line skaters, pedestrians, not to mention cars and trucks, are all looking for a piece of the road. Traffic laws are intended for all road users, as much for car drivers as for those on foot or two wheels. Red lights and stop signs must be respected by everybody. While car drivers are often irritated with pedestrians who stray off sidewalks and jaywalk, car drivers should also stay within their designated zones and respect speed limits. A car passenger or driver who is parked along a street and who suddenly opens a side door can easily cause a major accident with a cyclist. Their responsibility is to ensure that the lane is free before opening the door. Similarly, whether you're in a car or on a bike, it is always the vehicle travelling straight ahead that has priority. So, if a car wants to turn right, it must give way to pedestrians and cyclists who are going straight ahead. Don't forget that the best safety strategy for all road users is eye contact. If you're in a car, make eye contact with pedestrians and cyclists, and if you're on a bike or on foot, do the same. That way, you'll know you've been seen and your presence acknowledged. It's a simple gesture that can make the difference between a safe homecoming and a ride in an ambulance! 324 Guelph Street, Unit 7, Georgetown 905·877·3163 Thank you Georgetown for voting us your Favourite Taxi Company.
