Children are welcome, and encouraged, to participate. They will have a chance to bring the drums they made at the Big Daddy Festival or to make their own drums if they have not participated before. Come at 11:30 a.m. to make some native Canadian crafts and instruments for the drum circle that starts at 1 p.m. or just join in with the celebration of gratitude for the park that is open for all to enjoy. In 2010, the overall waste diversion rate remained constant at 57.4 per cent. This rate applies to all waste material managed by Halton Region through our programs and services. It is important to note that 60 per cent of household waste (i.e. Blue Box, GreenCart, Yard Waste, Metal, Backyard Composting, and Grasscycling) was diverted from landÍll in 2010. This is one of the highest residential waste diversion rates in Ontario! Thank you Halton residents! The Committee advises Halton Region Council regarding programs and strategies to promote the 3Rs--reduce, reuse, recycle to minimize the amount of waste going to the landÍll. The Committee is comprised of members from Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville. In 2010, the Committee reviewed Extended Producer Responsibility programs, explored multi-residential recycling opportunities, and guided the development of the Draft Solid Waste Management Strategy, including providing a vision for Halton to remain a leader with respect to waste reduction and diversion. The Results Total material diverted from landÍll through reuse, recycling and composting programs: 122,467 tonnes Amount of materials collected at the curb, events and Halton Waste Management Site: · Blue Box: 48,195 tonnes · GreenCart: 26,786 tonnes · Yard waste: 31,987 tonnes · Household hazardous waste: 860 tonnes (from over 43,312 vehicles) · Electronic waste: 581 tonnes Total garbage landÍlled at the Halton Waste Management Site: 74,327 tonnes (lowest amount of garbage landÍlled in a single year since the site opened in 1992). Extended Producer Responsibility (Industry Funded Programs under the Waste Diversion Act) In collaboration with our neighbouring municipalities, Halton Region has advocated to the Provincial government resulting in legislation that has enabled increased support from industry for the proper recycling and disposal of material through the following programs: · Take It Back! In consultation with the Joint Municipal Regional Waste Management Committee, Halton Region has developed a Draft Solid Waste Management Strategy. The Draft Solid Waste Management Strategy identiÍes 11 potential initiatives that could be implemented to achieve these higher waste diversion goals.
