8 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,July 19, 2011 Bulldogs vs. Gaels: Round five By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer For the fifth straight year, the Halton Hills Bulldogs and Green Gaels of Clarington will collide in the post-season, and if the script plays out as usual, it will likely take a fifth-and-deciding game to declare a winner. Game one of the best-of-5 Ontario Jr. B Lacrosse League's East Conference final will be played at the Garnet B. Rickard Complex in Bowmanville Thursday at 8 p.m., followed by game two Saturday at the Alcott Arena in Georgetown at 7:30 p.m. It's also a rubber match of sorts, with the Gaels having prevailed in 2007 and 2009 and the Bulldogs emerging victorious in 2008 and 2010. Three of the four series went to the limit, including last summer, when Halton Hills overcame a 2-0 series deficit versus Clarington and went on to claim the Founders Cup Canadian Jr. B championship. The 25-1 Green Gaels are seeded first in the East Conference, while the 23-3 Bulldogs are ranked second. Clarington won both regular-season meetings with the Bulldogs in 2011, a 12-5 victory in Bowmanville April 28 and a 10-6 decision in Georgetown June 9. "They're so quick and they move the ball well. They've also got some big scorers so we're going to have to watch them and put the pressure on them too. It's going to be a good battle," said Bulldogs' veteran forward Dylan Gilbert. "We had our moments against them in the two games this year, but we've really been working on our conditioning lately and that was our crutch against them. They took it to us. (Conditioning) is going to be the key. We got stronger as the series went on against them last year, but we definitely can't afford to be down two games to them again." Offensively, the Gaels have two of the league's top scorers in Dylan Goddard and former Mimico Mountaineer Brendan Muise, and on defence, Clarington gave up the fewest goals (110) than anyone else in the 25-team loop. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, have won 10 straight games since SPORTS & LEISURE losing to Clarington in the regular season and with Gilbert and Brendan MacDonald now healthy, coach Blaine McCauely can finally put his `A' lineup on the floor. "It's been a weird year," Gilbert added. "As soon as we got one guy back healthy, somebody else goes out, so to get everone back now is great because we're going to need everybody playing their best to go on a long run again." A 10-7 victory over the visiting Akwesasne Indians Friday night in Georgetown put the Bulldogs through to the conference final for the fifth year in a row, completing a three-game sweep. The 21-year-old Gilbert scored four times in the opening 14 minutes as the hosts built a 6-1 lead in a contest whose result was never in doubt. Chris Haynes, Brendan MacDonald, Brad Kri, Blake Kenny, Luke Laidlaw and Jordan Dance added single markers. In the West Conference final, it's another one-versus-two matchup with first-place Six Nations taking on the Elora Mohawks. Halton Hills Bulldog Chris Haynes refuses to give up possession of the ball to a couple of Akwesasne Indians during their Ontario Jr. B Lacrosse League playoff game Friday at the Alcott Arena. The Bulldogs won 10-7 to sweep the series and they'll now face the Clarington Green Gaels in the conference championship series beginning later this week. Photo by Eamonn Maher Golden girl Acton-area resident and rhythmic gymnast Emily Boycott had plenty of hardware to declare at customs upon her return from the recent World Special Olympics Summer Games in Greece. Boycott earned a gold medal in her Level 4 hoop routine and silvers in ball, clubs and all-around, along with a bronze in the ribbon exercise. This was her second trip to the World Games, having won five gold medals at the 2007 event in Beijing, China. Her mother Debbie, who is head coach of the Oakville Butterflies' Rhythmic Gymnastics Team, thought that Emily may retire after the Games in Greece, but the latter said that she's looking forward to resume training in the fall. The 28-year-old Boycott has been involved with Special Olympics for the past 12 years, also competing in swimming and figure skating. She defeated 16th ranked Molly Ward of Indianapolis in the round of 32 Wednesday before losing 5 & 4 to number one Jordan Lippetz, a 17-year-old from Bradenton, Fla.
