Legion president on pilgrimage By SHARON A. GRAHAM PRO Acton Legion Branch Branch president, George DeRabbie, left for Europe on Saturday on a pilgrimage of remembrance to visit Canadian battlefields in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. One "pilgrim" from each province, selected following an essay contest, is making the 15-day trip, touring battlefields, paying respect at cemeteries and memorials, and exploring museums. A very special thank you from the executive and membership of the Branch to Glen Wilkinson and George DeRabbie who have worked so hard to install the automatic doors. We all appreciate the hard work done by both our members to make it easier for people who use a mobility aid to access the Branch. On Canada Day, the Acton Citizen's Band started the party with a concert on the patio. The fireworks were exciting and the Acton Fire Fighters Association deserves a big round of applause. Recently, bandmaster, Dr. George Elliott accepted a $500 donation from Branch president George DeRabbie and entertainment chair Tony Rouse. On July 24, Branch 197 has invited all Legions within our zone to an adult zone picnic featuring a barbecue, entertainment and adultthemed games. Everything begins at 1 p.m., and it is a good idea to bring lawn chairs. The theme is "Christmas in July." On July 31, a trip is scheduled to Sunnybrook Hospital to visit the veterans. The bus leaves at 12:30 p.m. and returns at 4:30 p.m. There is a signup sheet on the bulletin board at the Branch. For more information on events or happenings at the Branch have a look at the web forum www.rclbr197.org. We are saddened to advise that we have lost a great veteran and longtime member of the branch and our executive committee. Sgt. Major Dave Crook passed away July 16, in Port Perry surrounded by his family. Please keep his wife Beth and Sue, Greg, Rob, Linda and the grandchildren, plus best friend Dileas, in your prayers. Dave was 18 years old when he joined the 2nd Battalion of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. As a private in the Korean War, he helped maintain a position for three days while being surrounded and cut off from allied support. For his bravery and steadfast behaviour in battle, he received a presidential citation from the government of the United States. Best Buy CORRECTION NOTICE On the July 15 flyer, page 4, please note that the Samsung Laptop featuring 2nd Generation Intel® CoreTM i5-2410M Processor (QX411) was advertised incorrectly with a 128 Solid State Drive. Before you start, think about it: every drag you take screws up your body. Smoking can cause permanent damage to your body. Once a person starts, it becomes extremely tough to quit. And did we mention all that cash you'll be blowing in the process? So, if you're tempted to start, ask yourself, "Is it worth it?"
