In Focus, August, 2011 4 Letter from In Focus Welcome to the dog days of summer, the time of year when the lucky ones migrate northwards to their cottages and those of us who are left behind slowly melt in the sweltering heat. Everything seems to slow down: runs become jogs, walks become strolls and breaths become sighs of "when will this heat break?" Moaning over summer heat is nothing new: "Dog days" is an old, old expression dating back to Ancient Rome that refers to the hottest, sultriest days of the year. Originally, the dog days of summer were the period of time when Sirius the brightest star in the night sky, which is also known as the Dog Star rose and set with the sun. The ancients believed that Sirius's heat combined with the heat of the sun to create hot, humid weather. While we now know that the summer heat has nothing to do with Sirius the Dog Star, the "dog days" expression has stuck with us. Whether you spend the dog days of summer swimming in a Muskokan lake or sitting by Fairy Lake, we hope you remember to bring In Focus with you. Send us a picture of you with In Focus and you could see yourself in our next issue! In this issue, you will find a wide variety of photos from the first full month of summer. From fundraisers to Canada Day celebrations, we have it all! Now it's your turn. How are you keeping cool this summer? What are your plans for the rest of summer?
