16 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, July 28, 2011 Georgetown teen among 156 to receive Duke of Edinburgh Award A Georgetown teen received a Duke of Edinburgh Award last week. Laura Crawford was among 156 youths awarded the Gold Award of Achievement from Prince Edward at a ceremony at Evergreen Brickworks in Toronto. The award is given to youth aged 14 to 25 who have had achievements in community service, skill development, physical recreation and adventurous journey. Crawford's service was at the local food bank and as a member of the Mayor's Youth Action committee. Her adventurous journey was a hiking trip to Algonquin Park, her skill is the trumpet, for fitness she plays soccer and basketball and enjoys hiking. She also took a two-week Introduction to Leadership course in Trenton. The award encouraged Crawford to lead an active lifestyle. She also gained confidence to try new things and as a result became more self-reliant. She's a member of many activities at school including the concert band and senior wind ensemble. Crawford hopes to become a registered dietitian after earning her human nutrition degree at University of Guelph. The award was founded by Prince Philip to encourage personal development and community involvement for young people.
