Acton Seniors Centre's GST auction will be fun not taxing By JULIE CONROY Acton Seniors Centre The Fit and Fun and the Gentle exercises classes are now combined for the summer. If you have never joined the exercise classes now would be a good time to try it. They are on Wednesday mornings at 9:15 a.m. Trying to beat the heat? The Centre is air-conditioned and open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the Community Centre and Library are available if you find the heat too much. Every Tuesday afternoon we feature a different movie, so you are very welcome to join us. On Fridays, we have shuffle board in the mornings, lunch at noon, and bingo in the afternoons. The signup sheets are up for two joint functions with the Georgetown Seniors Centre. The first is golf and lunch at Blue Springs on Wednesday, Sept. 7 and on Friday, Sept. 23 we will have another joint dance at the Acton Legion. Acton and Georgetown centres both have tickets for the golf and dance. On Monday, Sept. 26 we will be descending on Mohawk before the races finish for the season. This fall they are featuring short ribs, plus two other entrees. Everyone said what a great time they had last time. Tickets are now available for all three events. The fundraising committee is very busy arranging for our GST Auction on Saturday, Sept. 10. You can preview the items at 11 a.m. with the auction bidding starting at noon. There will be some great items offered for auction.Nearer the event a list of items will be posted. We will have some "celebrity" auctioneers. This is a major fundraiser for the Centre to help cover our everyday expenses. We hope everyone gets behind the efdinner for someone ... the list is endless. Spending money makes you hungry? There will be lunch available on the day. It should be an interesting and rewarding experience for everyone. A number of these tours have participated in special events such as the anniversaries of the liberation of Holland in 2005 and 2010, the 90th anniversary of the battle of Vimy Ridge and re-dedication of the monument in 2007, the 60th and 65th anniversaries of the DDay landings in Normandy and the opening ceremonies of the Juno Beach Centre in Normandy in 2003. This year the couple is conducting its 12th tour to the WW2 Canadian battlefields in Italy from September 18 to October 1, 2011. The tour will start with visiting Rome and conclude with a visit to Venice. In between the tour will visit places like Cassino and Ortona and all the other areas where the "D-Day Dodgers" battled the Nazis in Italy.
