Photo by Keith MacLellan The North Halton junior varsity Crimson Tide overcame a shaky start to come from behind and knock off the undefeated Hamilton Steelers in Saturday's Ontario Minor Football League Championship game at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke. After two turnovers in the first quarter, the Tide trailed 20-7 against the defending champions. Broken but not beaten, the Tide turned to stud running backs Brandon Gordon and Haydn GaskillCadwallader to wear down the Steeler defence. As its opponent adjusted, the Tide went to the air with quarterback Daniel Bateman throwing touchdown strikes to receivers Tudor Bertiean and Andrew Kaspiris. Defensive End Kwaku Boateng set the tone in the second half with a crushing hit on the Steelers' quarterback, forcing a fumble that led to another Tide touchdown. Tied at 41 with under a minute left, linebacker Ryan Noakes intercepted a tipped pass to give the Tide the ball in scoring position. Bertiean punted through the endzone for the game-winning single point as time expired, sealing the victory for North Halton in dramatic fashion. North Halton's bantam Crimson Tide faced the Steelers in the OMFL championship game Sunday. Despite a furious second-half comeback with key scores from Tanner Cadwallader and Davis Rapagna, the Tide fell 28-19. Rockets earn provincial medals The Georgetown Rockets' track team finished off its 2011 season with seven medals at two provincial championships meets. At the Ontario Minor Track & Field championships in Guelph, the big winner of the day was peewee girl Marie Cudmore, who captured gold medals in the 100m, 200m and the long jump. Throughout the season, Cudmore had placed in the top three in every meet she entered. At the Athletics Ontario Bantam, Midget & Youth championships, Mackenzie Cameron came away with a silver and bronze medal. In the bantam girls' 2,000m, Cameron placed second with a time of 7:12 and in the bantam girls' 1,200m (3:59), she finished third. The Rockets will resume training for the cross country running season in September. McGeer set for dressage nationals Fifteen-year-old Heather McGeer of Glen Williams will be on the Western Ontario Region team of 10 Canadian Pony Club riders who are set to compete in this weekend's National Dressage Championships at the Ancaster Fairgrounds. McGeer is entered in the Training level division and organizers intend to test the abilities of all the competitors by making them ride horses they've never ridden before. Taking up the sport nine years ago, the Caledon Pony Club member competed in her first Pony Club `D' Rally-- a one-day event involving dressage, show jumping and a cross-country phase-- at age nine, earning the first-place ribbon in her division. The Georgetown District High School student later moved up the Canadian Pony Club ranks and began eventing with the Ontario Horse Trials Association, becoming the OHTA Entry Champion on horse Toby, and has spent the past eight months on dressage training in preparation for this weekend's competition.
