8 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,August 23, 2011 Anderson scores Canadian baseball hat-trick By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer Relatively few young baseball players can boast about having won a national championship during their careers, let alone three Canadian titles. Yet that's what local resident Adam Anderson has already achieved by the age of 16, after Team Ontario captured the Canada Cup trophy earlier this month in Moncton, N.B. A lefthanded starting pitcher for the provincial squad, the Grade 12 Christ the King Secondary School student turned in a dazzling performance in the tournament-opening contest against Quebec before running into some turbulence as the Team Ontario starter for the championship game. Anderson, whose fastball has been clocked in the mid-80s mile-an-hour range, allowed just a run on three hits with five strikeouts over five innings the 4-2 victory over Quebec. In the final versus Saskatchewan, the 5-foot-11, 200-pound Anderson gave up a two-run triple in the first inning and while able to get out of a bases-loaded situation unscathed in the second, he was pulled in favour of game MVP Cal Quantrill-- the son of It's been a busy summer for Anderson, who has represented Canada on its Junior National Team against international competition at tournaments in Cuba and the Dominican Republic. He's also been selected to wear the red and white for the JNT's next outing in North Carolina in September, where a final roster of 20 players will be set for the World Junior Qualification Tournament in Cartagena, Colombia Sept. 23 to Oct. 2. From there, the top four countries will qualify for the 2012 World Junior Baseball Championship in Seoul, South Korea. Eligible for next year's Major League Baseball draft, Anderson will throw in front of big-league scouts this Thursday at Connorvale Park in Etobicoke during open tryouts for the MLB Bureau Camp. He also won Canadian championships as a member of his hometown Georgetown Eagles as a peewee in 2007 and with the bantams in 2009. Anderson played his club ball for the Cambridge-based Ontario Terriers this past season but will suit up for the Ontario Blue Jays' under-18s in 2012.
