A lot of Georgetown was built in the 1960s when Alcan homes built most of the Delrex subdivision. As a result the kitchens are small and have little counter space. Some of these homes have had a kitchen renovation done most likely in the '80s, however, there will be some that have their original cabinetry even though the original avocado or harvest gold appliances have had to be replaced. Even as the 1980s had some new counter materials available, they were new and expensive so most of the counters were replaced with new arborite countertops. Natural stone has become a usual counter material and the cost has become comparable to many manufactured materials. Cabinetry has changed over the decades with minor changes to profile, finishes and hardware. Changing the footprint of the cabinetry in these small Georgetown houses may be the design element that can improve the counter space and storage capacity. With the assistance of designers not affiliated with kitchen manufacturers it would be possible to get advice as to whether your cabinetry needs complete replacement or whether the cabinetry can be updated with minor alterations and additions. The kitchen is the heart of any home and with a little attention to the design and finishes it is possible to bring your kitchen out of the 1960s into 2011 and beyond. -- Submitted by Brian Gibson of Brian Gibson Designs, 416-931-3041, briangibsondesigns.com, briang@briangibsondesigns.com By Cory Soal R.H.A.D. There's hardly any aspect of our lives that doesn't have sound associations. Hearing keeps us in contact with life, with people, with the sounds of the world around us. It is a priceless gift. Sometimes our hearing fails us. Hearing loss can happen to anyone, regardless of age. Occasionally children are born with hearing defects. Hearing loss may be caused by infections, head injuries, prolonged exposure to loud noise, certain medications and of course the acting process. The latest development in hearing instruments is known as digital technology, the driving force behind computers, fax machines and satellite communications. This has transformed our lives in ways no one could have imagined. Just as the compact disc (CD) forever changed how we listen to music, new digital hearing aids are revolutionizing the way hearing health care professionals help people hear better. If you or one of your family members suspects a hearing loss, call... The Georgetown SMILE ADVICE!!! Such a smile transfigures; such a smile, if the artful but know, is the greatest weapon a face can have. You're never fully dressed without a SMILE!!! Creating confident smiles since 1982.
