Lord Acton (call me `Johnny') has busy week ahead of him By TED BROWN Staff Writer He might legally be called John Charles Harold Ferdinand Lyon-Dalberg-Acton, 5th Baron Acton-- but he's just as happy to be called Johnny, or at most, Johnny Acton. And as the 5th Baron Acton, he is in town for the next week to take part in numerous official events, including opening the Acton Fall Fair, as well as being one of the judges for the annual Miss Acton competition. He and his wife, Lady Lucinda, who is much more comfortable being addressed by her nickname `Percy,' are delighted to take part in the festivities this weekend. "I was contacted by (resident) Tracey Tyler to come and officially open the fall fair, and I leapt at the chance-- it's both fun and interesting," said Acton. "She found me on the Internet, and learned I was an author, as well as Lord Acton, so she invited us, and here we are." An author he is-- to date Acton has published 14 books, the most recent going to print this week. "I write non-fiction-- some about popular history, some about sports, some are about trivia and a great number of books about my favourite thing-- food." Acton often co-authors his books, sharing writing duties, as he likes to be able to bounce ideas off a colleague. "It gives me someone to talk to while I'm writing," he said. "Writing can be a lonely business so co-authoring makes it much more interesting." His latest book will be a guide to the Olympics coming to England next year. "We all know that most of the populous will be glued to their TVs for two and a half weeks, not really knowing what they are watching," said Acton. "This book will be something of a guide for them." As Lord Acton, he is a heredity peer, meaning he received his title from his father. The heredity lord is a life peer, passing his title to his son. Since 1999, the House of Lords has undergone changes, and the heredity peers are no longer active, with the exception of a percentage who are voted upon by the other House of Lords members. "I've still got a little bit of a chance, so I could be voted in," said Acton, "but I'm not sure it will happen." Acton became the 5th Baron Acton upon the death of his father in October 2010, and admits he always knew he'd inherit the honour one day, but not at such No more waiting in limbo! 7 Independent & Free Press, Thursday, September 15, 2011 Early Booking Guarantee Looking at taking a winter getaway but don't know if you should book now or wait? "I had expected my father to live another 20 years, but he didn't," said Acton, now 45. In addition to being an author, he has recently become a gentleman farmer, showing great interest in breeding pigs, more specifically, the Oxford Sandy and Black breed of pigs. "We lived for a time in London and became tired of it," said Acton, "so we sold the house and rented a farmhouse in Gloucestershire for a bit. The farm had some very dilapidated (pig) sties, so I said to the landlord, `If I cleaned them out, could I put some pigs in them?'" Although the traditional swine breed in the area was the Gloucester Old Spot, Acton decided he wanted to promote the Oxford Sandy and Black breed, a tribute to the fact he'd grown up in Oxfordshire. "It all came about after I'd written a book with a friend about hand curing and preserving, so I thought it was about time I practised what I'd been preaching." Acton said they kept two pigs at a time, and did so for a few years, feeding them primarily apples, as there were several old See LORD, pg. 9 The Milton Farm Saturday & Sunday 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Adults $6.00 Children Under 12 FREE Parking FREE Over 120 juried crafts people In the Great AT: Handmade Quality Great Food Live Entertainment Featuring Vladimir Gorodkin Hwy. 25 South to Milton & follow the signs. 8560 Tremaine Road, Milton, ON Call 905-878-8151 GI COUNTRY HERITAGE PARK $1.00 OFF ONE ADMISSION WITH THIS AD St. Andrew's United Church Welcomes You!
