It may come as a surprise to the hockey crowd that the GSC offers a power-skating sessions that are open to newcomers and that a new program has been introduced for the 2011-12 season. The CanPower Skating program develops skills such as speed, agility, power and balance that are well-suited for hockey or ringette players who are looking for additional ice time that is currently in short supply for Halton Hills youth ice users. CanPower is designed for youths age 6 and up, with a PrePower Skating program available for 4- to 6-year-olds who are at the shuffle, walk or glide stages. "So many hockey parents need to realize how important it is to teach proper skating skills. It's not about stickhandling with the puck or putting it into the net," said Lisa Sherk, the new GSC president. "Skate Canada is focusing on long-term athletic development and skills development and we're continuing to incorporate those elements into our programs." Currently, the GSC has about 400 members registered, along with another 300 in its partnership program with local elementary schools. It's not too late to sign up for the upcoming season in any of the GSC's various figure skating or power skating programs. Visit the website www.georgetownskatingclub.ca for detailed info. One of the more anticipated events on the GSC calendar is the Skates Alive regional competition Dec. 10-11, which is expected to draw about 400 skaters and their families from 13 clubs in the Central Ontario Section. Volunteers are needed for the GSC Skates Alive committee, which last hosted the event in 2008. For more info about that event or other GSC programs, call 905-866-2330 or email info@georgetownskatingclub.ca. Local resident Jamie Dowell (left) played well on defence throughout the six-team tourney, while longtime Halton Hills Minor Lacrosse Association coach Daryl Haynes (right) was a member of the Team Ontario coaching staff. For Haynes, who last month moved to Calgary to take on the job with the Alberta Eletrical Safety Operator, it was his fifth Canadian field title after winning midget championships with Halton Hills teams in 2006 and 2008, along with under-16 victories for Team Ontario in 2009 and 2010. The 18-year-old Dowell, a freshman at St. Lawrence University in New York on a field lacrosse scholarship, earned his fourth national championship in Burnaby and has another year of eligibility at the under-19 level to try to match coach Haynes for the number of Canadian titles won.
