26 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, September 15, 2011 What's Cookin': Fresh seafood just out the door and up the street Gerry is writing today... Continuing on our Maritime theme, here is the price of seafood in July in Rocky Harbour, Newfoundland at the seafood purveyor: Fresh whole lobster $7.49/lb Mussels $1.39/lb Salmon filet $6.75/lb Halibut $7.75/lb Scallops $9.99/lb Cod tongues $7.95/lb Cod filet $4.99/lb I stopped in to the local fish market in Rocky Harbour just to check out their prices and see what was available. We were staying in a B+B, so there was no opportunity to purchase any fish to cook or barbecue, sadly. But when we were eating lunch at one of the local spots, Earls, recommended to us, I watched while another customer ordered a lobster dinner and out the back door went one of the staff just across the street and up the road a bit to the fish market and Lori Gysel & Gerry Kentner picked up the one lobster for the order from their tank. Apparently the pot was ready. Now that's fresh! Also discovered while eating lunch at Jackie's, another local spot, that fresh fries are a hugely popular item, all homemade of course. There were regular fries, fries with gravy, fries with cheese, fries with cheese and gravy, poutine, fries with gravy and hamburger, and fries with gravy, cheese and hamburger. I passed on the fries, but had a delicious fresh cod burger. Fries are served everywhere with everything! What wonderful gastronomic memories! Have fun and keep cooking!
