Members of the Halton Commercial Printers, who won the Elite division championship at Saturday's Kinsmen Girls Softball League Day of Champs final, surround outgoing league commissioner Jim Ford, who is stepping down from leading the league after more than four decades. The Kinsmen Club of Georgetown recently informed league members that, after 50 years, the Club could no longer organize and support the league. Players and others took time Saturday to thank Ford, a member of the Halton Hills Sports Hall of Fame, for his years of volunteering. The KGSL has a meeting planned for next month to discuss its options for continuing to operate. Photo by Ron Stiel Protest fears prompt cancellation of all-candidates meetings By FRANCIS BAKER Metroland Media Group An area agricultural organization has cancelled its two upcoming provincial election all-candidates meetings over safety concerns. "Due to escalating talk of rallies and protests we are being forced to take this step to ensure the safety of the candidates, the farmers entering the meeting, others using these public facilities, and our event organizers," states a release from the Wellington Federation of Agriculture. Meetings were scheduled for Arthur Tuesday for Perth-Wellington candidates, and Aboyne on Sept. 20 for Wellington-Halton Hills candidates. Both meetings were cancelled this past Monday. Wellington Federation of Agriculture President Dave Parker said the escalating rhetoric made him "deeply concerned about the safety" of directors, spectators, and candidates. "We've had to forfeit our right (to discuss agricultural issues) because of the threat of protests," he said. There's also an issue of liability for damage to the meeting locations. "Our sincere thanks and apology goes out to the many candidates and their staff that have prepared for and taken time out of their busy schedules to participate in these debates," the release states. "It is unfortunate that the agricultural organizations have been placed in this position-- organizations comprised of tireless volunteers." Meetings will be arranged with the elected MPP in each riding to discuss agricultural issues after the Oct. 6 election. Questions will be forwarded to the candidates, and responses posted on the Wellington Federation of Agriculture website at www.wfofa.on.ca. · All-candidates meetings update page 4 REFINANCING?
