6 HEALTH CARE - Georgetown & Acton · Thursday , September 15, 2011 `Registered' health professionals governed by regulatory colleges Enchanted Forest Take a Hike! What does it mean when a health professional is "registered" and why should it matter to me? Whenever an individual sees a health care provider, they place their trust in that person. They expect to receive safe, effective, quality care. Health professionals that are registered must report to their respective regulatory body or college and abide by their strict guidelines. The College of Physiotherapy is one of Ontario's 21 health regulatory colleges. These colleges were established to protect the right of Ontarians' to safe, effective and ethical health care. All 21 belong to the Federation of Health Regulatory Colleges in Ontario (FHRCO). The College of Physiotherapists of Ontario, for example, ensures that physiotherapists maintain a certain level of professionalism, education and provide evidence based treatments to their clients. The college audits physiotherapists every five years and these clinicians must pass a national exam in order to practice in Ontario. Registered health professions, through their regulatory colleges, set standards for practice that work to ensure that the public receive the best possible outcomes. Knowing that registered health professionals meet education standards, deal fairly with complaints from patients, and focus on continually improving their skills through College registration builds confidence with the public. Legislation and regulations are in place to protect the public interest. There are so many new treatments and therapies that exist now that it can sometimes be confusing as to which to choose. You can be confident that when you work with a Registered Health Professional you are receiving treatments that have been well researched and are proven to be effective.
