Above: Chirita with hoya Left: Chirita helianthoides `Prairie Sunset' or perennial false sunflower. This plant, which some garden writers think is overplanted, remains one of my favourites. (So much so that I may have recommended it to you already.) Introduced in 2002 by Neil Diboll of Wisconsin, it is a selection of the native that sports lovely dark purple stems. Aha! The perfect contrast to the flower, you say! So yellow advances, yellow contrasts and yellow warms. But it also just is. I found four examples in the garden today where yellow spoke to me in a different way. First, there is a lovely trailing nemesia, cousin to snapdragons spilling forth from a container. This plant, Nemesia `Lemon' comes from the Proven Winners Sunsatia series that also includes several other warm colours like `Mango', `Banana' and `Cranberry'. This winner of an AGM-- Award of Garden Merit-- flowers and flowers and displays many shades of yellow. It is a showstopper on its own or combined with other annuals.
