The provincial election is well underway and the October 6 election day is fast approaching. As with previous elections, I have sent a questionnaire to Halton's provincial election candidates asking them how they would resolve critical issues facing the Region. The candidates were asked to respond by yesterday (September 19). The questions, and their responses, will be posted on our website www.halton.ca/ontarioelection2011 on Thursday, Sept. 22. Halton is one of the fastest growing regions in Canada and is mandated to reach a population of 780,000 by 2031 through the Provincial Places to Grow Act. To meet the growth targets, the combined municipal-provincial infrastructure costs to 2031 are expected to reach approximately $8.6 billion. Water, wastewater and regional roads as well as provincially funded schools and hospitals will be needed. Municipal infrastructure funding needs to be a priority with the Provincial government if we are to maintain the current quality of life in Halton. Voters should consider some key questions as the October 6 election approaches. How will candidates ensure that infrastructure programs are targeted to accommodate growth in Halton? Would candidates be willing to vote against their party if it means a better future for Halton? I hope you will take the time to learn about the issues and vote in this provincial election.
