10 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,September 27, 2011 High school roundup SPORTS & LEISURE to gel. We don't have what you'd call a simple playbook either, so the kids are picking it up gradually." In the junior game Thursday, CtK's Dondre Palmer caught a long touchdown pass from quarterback Brad Ranson with just 14 seconds left in the fourth quarter as the Jaguars came back from a 9-0 first-half deficit to beat the Rebels 13-9. Tanner Gaskill-Cadwallader rushed for the Jags' other major score. GOLF: The Jaguars were victorious in both the girls' and boys' results from the HSSAA Tour event at the Wyldewood course in Hornby last week that was shortened by rain. Under a modified scoring system, CtK's Samantha Spencer was first in the girls' field with a total of 44 to win by one shot. On the boys' side, the Jaguar team consisting of Joel Albany, Robbie Johnson, Tom Smith and Matt Knox finished up with a score of 98 to prevail by three strokes over Corpus Christi, with 21 Halton schools competing. Albany's 32 was one shot back of the individual boys' champion. Rebels, Jags split games The gridiron rivalry between the two Georgetown high schools was renewed last Thursday, with both the senior and junior games decided by less than a touchdown. Christ the King's Jaguars and the Georgetown Rebels didn't face each other in Halton high school senior action last fall as they played in different divisions. Both teams moved the ball well offensively at times Thursday in the season-opener for both teams, but had trouble finishing off drives, with a pair of first-half rushing touchdowns by Mac Morrison standing up as the difference in a 14-8 Rebel triumph. Morrison also had two TDs called back due to penalties but still finished with about 150 yards rushing. "Mental mistakes were killing us on offence but we were fine on defence, and that's usually the case in football early in the year," said Rebels' head coach Andrew Buckles, who has overseen varsity teams with the North Halton Crimson Tide club program the past four years. "The offence takes a little longer Receiver Tom Pottruff of the Georgetown Rebels tries to shake Christ the King tackler Haydn Gaskill-Cadwallader during their HSSAA Tier II senior football matchup Thursday afternoon. The Rebels won 14-8 in the first game played on CtK's new artificial turf field. GDHS linebacker Ryan Keith was named his team's MVP in the defensive struggle. Photo by Eamonn Maher Raiders pick up third win of the season Krystian Yorke's goal midway through the third period was the winner as the host Georgetown Raiders edged the Huntsville Otters 3-2 Saturday night in an Ontario Junior Hockey League contest. The victory improved the Raider record to 3-2-0 this season. Stephen Genua and Mike Charbonneau tallied earlier on to give Georgetown a 2-0 advantage in front of about 325 spectators. Sixteen-year-old Michael Giugovaz of Brampton, a Peterborough Petes' draft pick, made 26 saves in his debut for the Raiders, who were left a goalie short when starter Michael Nishi's Ontario Hockey League rights were dealt from the Windsor Spitfires to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds last week. Nishi served as the Hounds' backup in a pair of weekend games. It was a 2-1-0 week for the Raiders after a 9-3 thrashing of the Burlington Cougars and a 5-2 loss to the Milton IceHawks Friday. Newcomer Manny Gialedakis helped the Raiders break out of an early-season scoring funk, netting four goals against Burlington as the 19-year-old from Woodbridge, who split last season between a team in Fresno, Calif. and the Smith's Falls Bears. Brock Labelle (2), Yorke, Nathan Domagala and Jacob Bauchman rounded out the scoring. Rookie Marcus Nepinak of Oakville won his first game in Georgetown colours, blocking 21 shots. In the loss to Milton, the Raiders outshot the home side 47-30 but could only manage a pair of goals from Patrick Megannety as the resurgent IceHawks went 4 for 7 on the power play and won their second game in a row for the first time since Jan. 2009. The Raiders play the Buffalo Jr. Sabres Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Alcott Arena. CORRECTION: In last Tuesday's Independent & Free Press, Georgetown residents Todd Bannerman and Chris Taylor were listed as being healthy scratches for the Oakville Blades in their 1-0 loss to the Raiders on Sept. 16, when in fact both played a regular shift. Bannerman scored his first goal of the season Saturday in Oakville's 5-4 overtime comeback victory over Buffalo, with linemate Taylor earning an assist. Taylor notched his first of the year against Buffalo Sept. 13. Four ex-Bulldogs taken in NLL draft A bumper crop of former Halton Hills Jr. B Bulldogs were selected in last week's National Lacrosse League Entry Draft in Toronto. No fewer than four Bulldogs' graduates had their names called at the draft, the most in the 16-year history of the Jr. B franchise's existence in Georgetown. Caledon's Jay Card, a forward attending Hofstra University, was taken with the first pick in the third round by the Minnesota Swarm. Georgetown residents Adam McGourty and Kyle Andrews, both 21-year-old defenders, also went in the third round to Washington and Rochester, respectively. Kyle Davis of Caledon, who had 79 points with the Brampton Jr. A Excelsiors this summer, was drafted by the NLL-champion Toronto Rock in the fifth round, 44th overall.
