4 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, September 29, 2011 ELECT Poll doesn't faze local candidates By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer Wellington-Halton Hills provincial candidates aren't very concerned about the results of a poll conducted for the Toronto Star that indicates a potential Progressive Conservative landslide here. The poll, conducted by Forum Research, indicates Ontario is headed for a minority government. It surveyed 40,750 people and showed the Liberals and Conservatives in a dead heat with 35 per cent support each, The New Democratic Party has 23 per cent, and Green Party 5 per cent. Due to the large number of voters surveyed, Forum was able to provide riding by riding results and in Wellington-Halton Hills it showed PC Ted Arnott with 46.3 per cent support, a nearly 16 per cent lead over Liberal Moya Johnson (30.4 per cent). NDP candidate Dale Hamilton has 16.9 per cent while Green Party representative Raymond Dartsch has 5.3 per cent. When asked for his reaction to the poll Arnott said with days to go before the election, "a lot can happen between now and then." "I said to my campaign team after we received the news of the poll, we can't allow ourselves to become complacent in any way shape or form, we can't slow down, in fact we have to intensify. We would do that even if we didn't have this poll," said Arnott. He added in 2003 when he ran for reelection in Waterloo-Wellington riding a poll showed he was 18 points behind, and five days later he won by 5,000 votes. "So what do you draw from that?" asked Arnott. "The only poll that really matters is Oct. 6," said Johnson. "I don't put much weight on what the polls are telling me. I'm just out there to win this, and nothing's changed." Johnson said the poll was a robo-poll, which is an interactive voice response phone survey done by computer. "The range of people they talked to ranged between 40 people per riding to I don't know how many hundred people, so we don't know how many people were called in Wellington-Halton Hills," said Johnson. "So I'm not putting any weight in that poll." NDP candidate Dale Hamilton said she had heard only 50 people were polled in the Wellington-Halton Hills riding. "I don't know that it's an accurate picture," said Hamilton. "I really do feel our campaign is building steam. I'm very encouraged by the number of young people who are coming through cyberspace-- on Facebook and Twitter." "I think the poll doesn't capture the recent wave of interest we think will translate to some extent from the federal (election trend). We really do feel there is enthusiasm from people who don't ordinarily get out to vote because they are fed up with the process and the system."
