24 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, October 13, 2011 SPORTS & LEISURE New York Rangers' all-star defenceman Marc Staal, who has yet to play this season due to headaches after a concussion suffered in February, was spotted in Georgetown Tuesday morning skating by himself at Memorial Arena. When approached by an Independent & Free Press reporter for an interview, he politely declined, saying Rangers' team officials had instructed him not to speak with the media. The 24-year-old had apparently booked the ice surface for early Tuesday and Wednesday morning but didn't show up Injured NHLer Staal skates at Memorial Wednesday morning. While Staal refused to say why he was in town, it's known Georgetown-based Ontario Migraine Clinic is becoming the place to go for world-class elite athletes who are struggling to recover from the effects of concussions. Chiropractor/acupuncturist Brendan Cleary, founded the OMC on Mill St. in 1999. Cleary can't comment on specific players he's treated due to physician-patient confidentiality, but it could be more than just a coincidence that Staal was spotted in Georgetown. After a scoreless first period, Caleb Apperson and Tyler MacPherson scored before the 2:13 mark of the middle stanza for the visiting Raiders, who outshot the Jr. Sabres 43-39 on the evening. Nineteen-year-old defenceman Geoffrey Bagnall, acquired from the Toronto Jr. Canadiens last week, had a goal and two assists for Georgetown, with Jacob Bauchman and Patrick Megannety rounding out the scoring. Michael Giugovaz earned the win in goal to improve to 5-1-0 on the campaign. Coming up this weekend, the Raiders will face division rival Burlington in back-to-back contests. Hill, a former Toronto Blue Jay and Mississauga North Tigers product, struck out four batters and allowed only three hits against the defending champions. His only blemish was a solo home run surrendered to America's Matt Clark in the seventh inning. "The first couple of innings I was just hitting my spots with my fastball, which was the biggest thing for me today," Hill said. "Basically, they had to hit my pitch." It was the final pool game for Canada, which went 6-1 through seven games. The 30-year-old Hill, who has undergone two Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgeries and had a stem cell procedure done in May, wasn't certain whether he'd start the final second-round game Friday against Cuba or pitch in the first playoff elimination matchup Saturday. Earlier in the tournament, Hill pitched five shutout innings to lead Canada to a 3-1 win over Japan.
