30 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, October 20, 2011 SPORTS & LEISURE After a slow start to the Hobie 16 sailing competition at the Pan American Games in Mexico, Georgetown's Marshall Champ and his partner Daniel Borg of Toronto were buoyed by their third-place result on Tuesday. The 20-year-old Champ and Borg, 49, finished last in the eight-boat field in each of the three races held in Puerto Vallarta before placing third in Tuesday's second event of the day to remain within reach of the leaders with two more races staged on Wednesday. Hobie 16 sailing competitors will have two races a day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to complete the competition. As well, Glen Williams resident Denise Kelly is coaching the Canadian women's road cycling team in Guadalajara, which came away with a bronze medal from the individual time trial race held on Sunday as Vancouver's Laura Brown placed third. Next up for the Canadian women, who had their best showing in recent memory at the World Championships in Copenhagen last month, is the road race on Saturday. Kelly is the National Team Women's Endurance Development Coach. Champ, Borg take third in Pan-Am race Rebels nipped by Raiders Goaltender Ashley Penrice of the visiting Georgetown District High School Rebels turns aside a shot from a St. Thomas Aquinas shooter during their first-round Halton high school Tier I senior girls' field hockey contest Tuesday in Oakville. Penrice, who plays for Ontario's under-18 girls' team, had an excellent match to keep the result scoreless after regulation time, with the Raiders prevailing 3-1 on penalty flicks to end GDHS's season.
