With election over, it's back to the real job With the October 6 provincial election behind us, the work of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario begins anew. It is an honour and a privilege for me to serve the people of Wellington-Halton Hills, in what will be the 40th provincial parliament since Canada's Confederation in 1867. I want to again express appreciation to all who supported me during the recent election campaign. Maybe I'm biased, but I believe our success in Wellington-Halton Hills was directly due to the efforts of our campaign team: the best team of any party in any riding in the province. Thanks again to all who got involved. I also wish to pay tribute to my opponents: Moya Johnson, Dale Hamilton, and Raymond Dartsch. All were passionate about the views of their respective parties. While I may disagree with their philosophies and some of their political ideas, I want to thank them again for their commitment in running in the election. The very day after election was over, I was back in our riding office (a little bleary-eyed) at 9 a.m. I had a full day, which ended in the evening at the Erin Ted Arnott Fall Fair. After an election is over, there is always a great deal of catching up to do. On October 11, I publicly called upon the provincial government to act on one of our most urgent issues: the need for a comprehensive jobs plan. I suggested that the premier undertake immediate consultations with job creators in business and the leaders of commerce and industry, and act upon their advice. He should also listen to the ideas of the leaders of our colleges and universities. And in a minority parliament, he must also listen to the opposition. During the recent campaign, I met literally thousands of people. Many told me their concerns about jobs and the economy. I talked to people who couldn't find work, others who were burdened by taxes they couldn't afford, some who were worried about the provincial deficit and debt, others still who were working hard but whose household budgets are stretched to the limit. We need a provincial jobs plan for everyone in Ontario, not just one group of people or one region of the province. It must be inclusive, not exclusive. We need the government to demonstrate it understands the economic stress people are experiencing, and that it is trying to find ways to help. The new provincial cabinet was sworn in on October 20. Our PC caucus reconvened on that same day, strengthened by the addition of 16 newly-elected MPPs, bringing our numbers in the house to 37 PC MPPs in total. As always, my first priority is my constituents. Please feel free to contact me, if you have an idea or concern involving the provincial government. ··· Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott welcomes your comments.
