22 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, November 3, 2011 Anderson spins a gem at Florida tournament Going up against one of the toprated high school-age pitchers in the U.S., Georgetown's Adam Anderson came away victorious at a baseball prospects tournament in Jupiter, Fla. last week. Anderson, a 16-year-old lefthanded pitcher, started the opening contest for the Ontario Blue Jays' under-18 team at the Perfect Game SPORTS & LEISURE World Wood Bat Championship, facing the Orlando Scorpions, who countered with highly touted American prospect Carson Fulmer. Fulmer was chased from the game early on, while Anderson tossed fiveand-a-third innings, striking out six, giving up three hits and just two walks in his lengthiest start of the season, throwing 107 pitches in total. The Grade 11 Christ the King student left the game with the Jays leading 8-2 and they held on for an 8-7 victory, finishing the tourney with a 2-1-1 record. Next up for Anderson, whose fastball has been clocked in the mid to high 80-miles-per-hour range, is a training camp in Florida with Canada's Junior National Team Nov. 9-15. From there, the Canuck roster will be cut down to 20 players from 24 for the 14-team COPABE Americas World Junior Qualification Tournament in Colombia Nov. 17-28. Anderson is set to make an official visit to the University of North Carolina-Greensboro tomorrow (Friday) and is entertaining several scholarship offers from U.S. schools. He is eligible for next June's Major League Baseball Draft and has already received questionnaires from the Boston Red Sox and New York Mets. Jaguars up against it as playoffs arrive Christ the King's Paul Zebarth (10) and his Jaguar teammates had some difficulty getting past the blocks of Milton District's MacIntyre brothers Jordan (8) and Austin (18) during their Halton high school senior boys' Tier I volleyball match in Georgetown Monday afternoon. The Mustangs completed a 10-0 regular season with a two-set triumph, 25-16, 25-18. The Jaguars, who began the year on an 8-0 run, have dropped their last three matches due to a rash of injuries, including a damaged thumb for star middle hitter Brandon Koppers. CtK still managed to place second in the standings and will host a quarterfinal Monday afternoon, as will third-place GDHS.
