Tuesday, November 8, 2011 The Independent & Free Press Special pullout section 12 Pages GDHS students will honour the fallen Class project pays tribute to 23 high school alumni By TED BROWN Staff Writer When the 1,850 students at Georgetown District High School (GDHS) observe Remembrance Day at the school Friday morning, there will be a new wrinkle to the service. Following assemblies with speakers and various acts of remembrance, all students and teachers will march past the newly-completed Wall of Remembrance, and, with an honour guard from the Lorne Scots overseeing the display, will place their poppies on the wreath, to symbolize they are remembering those who died in the wars. The Wall of Remembrance, and Remembrance Day at GDHS, is the culmination of a project where a number of people who felt that it was time to properly recognize former students and teachers who placed themselves in harm's way, and doing so, gave the supreme sacrifice in the pursuit of freedom. For decades there had been a pair of bronze plaques in the display cases at Georgetown District High School, with 22 names on them. During the school's 125 years of history, the 22 fought in the Great War (First World War), the Second World War, and the Korean conflict. searched the 23 names of war dead who attended GDHS and have prepared bios and information of each one.
