"At Dieppe, I stood on the top of the cliffs overlooking the beach," said de Rabbie, "And I looked down to the pebble beach-- and thought to myself, `Who was the idiot who thought this would be a good idea to attack?' I had to shake my head in disbelief." He had `read all the books and seen all the black and white documentaries,' but was still quite moved when he saw how ludicrous the mission had actually been. Later that day, de Rabbie and his wife Alice walked down to the sea on the pebble beach, and got a feel for the area. "I left a flag at the edge of the water, and a few poppies," said de Rabbie, "And stood there for a moment, having a few personal thoughts. As we started our walk back up on the pea gravel, on the major grade, I found I was overcome with emotion, almost like a déjà vu. "It was a feeling like a little kid going to the principal's office, when you get that lump in your throat, and you're not sure you're going to be able to talk," said de Rabbie. I said I was, and sat down. She left me alone for a bit. "As I watched the poppies floating away, I sat there wondering `What in hell is the matter with me?' when one of the other guys on the tour came over to ask if I was all right.
