4 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,November 8, 2011 Tooth Chatter `No Valuables on Board' Police hope signs deter auto thieves 32 MILLION PEOPLE WEAR DENTURES! But more than ½ of them have problems with fit, appearance and function. If your dentures are over 5 years old, you may have forgotten how good new dentures can look and feel. People whose dentures are too old, often put up with unnecessary embarrassment and discomfort. Some even change their lives, spending more time alone, or avoid laughing, smiling or eating their favourite foods. Prolonged use of denture adhesives can mask infections, and cause bone loss in the jaw. Illfitting dentures can also cause wrinkles around the mouth, and other health problems, that can make you look and feel much older. Replacing worn dentures is very important to your overall health. The message of the award-winning public awareness initiative is aimed at educating the public about the rise in theft from auto crime and how to prevent it. In 2009 a similar campaign dubbed "If you can see it, they can steal it" was launched, at which time local residents were made aware of the fact that over $1 million worth of valuables were stolen from vehicles throughout Burlington, Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills. It appears some people just didn't get that message as the majority of reports filed with police still indicate people are leaving valuables in plain view. This year cards similar to the "Baby on Board" signs will be handed out complete with suction cups with the intention that the public place them inside the rear window of their vehicles. The cards will serve as reminders to Halton residents not to leave valuables in their vehicles and will notify would-be-thieves that the vehicle's owner subscribes to crime prevention ideology and the chance of valuables being found in the car is highly unlikely and breaking into the vehicle is not worth the risk of getting caught. In partnership with Crime Stoppers of Halton, Halton Regional Police Service and GO Transit, officers will be at various GO Transit stations across Halton throughout the week distributing information postcards and the "No Valuables on Board" cards to commuters. They will also answer any public safety questions they may have during the rush hour. In all, Halton Police and GO Transit members, hope to reach the more than 14,000 Halton area residents who use GO Transit each day and could be targeted for thefts from their vehicles in driveways, malls, recreation complexes and major parking lots. Halton Regional Police Service volunteers from the Communities on Phone Patrol program will be at sports and theatre complexes throughout the region delivering the message as well. · For more see page 5 Alexander Trenton, DD, F.C.A.D. Hearing keeps us in contact with life, with people, with the sounds of the world around us. It is a priceless gift. Sometimes our hearing fails us. Hearing loss can happen to anyone, regardless of age. Occasionally children are born with hearing defects. Hearing loss may be caused by infections, head injuries, prolonged exposure to loud noise, certain medications and of course the acting process. The latest development in hearing instruments is known as digital technology, the driving force behind computers, fax machines and satellite communications. This has transformed our lives in ways no one could have imagined. Just as the compact disc (CD) forever changed how we listen to music, new digital hearing aids are revolutionizing the way hearing health care professionals help people hear better.
