12 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,November 15, 2011 SPORTS & LEISURE Woods leads Raiders in win over Waxers Leading scorer Brendan Woods had a natural hat trick in the second period as the Georgetown Raiders went on to beat the visiting Markham Waxers 5-2 Saturday night in an Ontario Junior Hockey League contest. Woods's outburst rescued the Raiders from penalty trouble that caused them to play the final two periods with only four defencemen, and Markham went just 2 for 14 with the man advantage. Caleb Apperson collected four assists on the night, while captain Alex Lubczuk notched an empty-netter and helped set up three goals. Jacob Bauchman rounded out the scoring in front of close to 500 spectators at the Alcott Arena. On Friday night in Markham, Georgetown scored three times in 91 seconds early in the second period to take the lead, but the Waxers potted the winner on a power play with 1:35 remaining in regulation to clinch a 5-3 win. Ryan Lopes, Krystian Yorke and Matt Chiarantano tallied for the visitors. Raiders' head coach and general manager Greg Walters and second-year centreman Patrick Megannety will be back for Thursday's game in Brampton against the last-place Capitals. Both were in Langley, B.C. representing Team Canada East at the World Jr. A Challenge and came away with silver medals after a 4-2 loss to Team Canada West in Sunday's championship game. Megannety, who is headed for Clarkson University next season, had a goal in Team Canada East's 4-2 semifinal victory over the U.S. on Friday. This Saturday, the Raiders will host the Hamilton Red Wings beginning at 7:30 p.m. and the two teams are set to meet again on Monday in Steeltown. Winning the first game 25-17, the Rebels trailed for much of the second set but rallied to take a 27-26 lead, only to have the 13-0 Mustangs come back to win 29-27. Milton then won game three 15-8 to claim the Halton title, although the season isn't over for Georgetown's seniors. They'll host a Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference AAAA semifinal match Wednesday at 3 p.m. against the Hamilton Wentworth league's finalist, with the winner moving on to face the HWCAA winner Thursday in Steeltown. Milton will host Hamilton St. Mary's for the GHAC AAA championship on Wednesday. Attempting to win GDHS's first HSSAA girls' basketball title since 1985, the junior Rebels came up just a bit short last Thursday as the undefeated Abbey Park Eagles prevailed 39-36 at Sheridan College in Oakville. Down by 11 points at halftime, coach Manny Saitis's side was able to cut the Abbey Park lead to 33-31 at one stage, but point guard Steph Wilson and captain Hayley Buist, GEORGETOWN JUNIOR "A" Basketball who had a team-high 12 points in the game, fouled out in the fourth. Emily Fisher added 11 points for the Rebels, Hana Gadzik hit a couple of three-pointers and Rachel Gorjup was the top rebounder on the day. CtK's juniors will play host to Bishop Reding Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in an HSSAA Tier II semifinal contest. The second-place Jags finished with a 4-3 regular season record, while Bishop Reding was 2-5. Football GEORGETOWN JR.
