Schools highlight anti-bullying work this week Bullying Prevention and Awareness Week runs from November 13-19 and many schools within the Halton District School Board are highlighting their ongoing work to reinforce to students ways to make everyone feel welcome and part of the school community. Georgetown District High School's Gay-Straight Alliance will be making announcements addressing issues of bullying, and have created T-shirts and buttons that publicize students' pledge to change their vocabulary. The Halton District School Board believes every student has the right to learn in a safe, healthy and inclusive environment. This belief has guided the Board's implementation of the Safe Schools Act, the Code of Conduct, and the development of policies to ensure schools are safe, positive and supportive places to learn. Legion gets a Dulux look Branch 120 (Georgetown) of the Royal Canadian Legion received a freshening up recently after being selected as the recipient of the Adding Colour to People's Lives project, a global initiative supported by Dulux Paints in Canada. It has been made possible thanks to a $1 million investment in paint by Dulux Paints in communities across Canada. The paint which is being invested in neighbourhoods from coastto-coast is being used to beautify public structures, as well as the buildings of community, charitable and non-profit organizations. The current wood-panelled walls in the hallways, the kitchen, restrooms, bar areas and lounge all received a facelift. Among those volunteering to paint the kitchen were Branch 120 treasurer Nellie Scheringa (left) and Ladies Auxiliary secretary Debbie Smith. Hearing loss due to age and noise are cumulative. That is, hearing loss from noise exposure will be added on to hearing loss due to aging. Neither are not medically correctable. There is something to be said for protecting the hearing that we have left by wearing hearing protectors when exposed to noisy environments. Each of us reacts differently to hearing loss. We may totally or partially deny that a problem exists. Typical "denial" statements are "you're mumbling again", or "I was not paying attention", and can be a way of concealing hearing difficulties.
