12 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,November 29, 2011 SPORTS & LEISURE Montag revels in Vanier win By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer After nearly four hours of pounding the turf of the B.C. Place field in Vancouver on Friday night, Elliott Montag said he had no difficulty racing out to meet his teammates for their victory celebration. Montag's McMaster Marauders claimed their first-ever Vanier Cup title as Canadian university football champions, upsetting the top-ranked Laval Rouge et Or 41-38 on a field goal in the second round of overtime. Leading 23-0 at halftime, the well-prepared Marauders had stunned a Laval side that had allowed an average of just 60 yards rushing per game this season, with starting centre Montag and the Mac offensive line dominating the line of scrimmage, totaling 190 yards on the ground for the evening. But Laval rallied to take the lead 24-23 in the fourth quarter and the back-and-forth scoring continued, with the Marauders missing an opportunity to win the game with a field goal on the last play of regulation, before finally clinching the win on a 20-yard Tyler Crapigna kick in extra time. "It was one hell of a game to be a part of, and even though it was emotionally and physically exhausting, it was definitely the best moment of my life when that kick was good," said the third-year kinesiology student. "I think we ran something like 90 offensive plays in the game, which is unheard of. By the time the second overtime came around my legs were feeling really heavy, like they didn't want to go anywhere. You're going all on adrenaline at that point and it was really hot in the stadium. The whole game was just a blur. Running out onto the field at the start of the game was the best feeling ever, and then sitting on the sidelines holding hands with my teammates for the game-winning field goal, just saying we finally did it." Laval had won six of the last dozen Vanier Cups and never lost one, although the reigning Quebec champs couldn't slow down McMaster QB Kyle Quinlan. The championship MVP threw for 482 yards, spectacularly hurdled a Laval tackler and knocked out another with a crushing block. "There were a few Kyle Quinlan highlights, but what I'll always remember is what I saw in the huddle, his calmness and composure when the overtime started and he just says, `Let's get the job done,'" added Montag, who also won a Halton Tier II senior championship as a Grade 10 student with Christ the King's Jaguars and an OVFL title with the Mississauga Warriors. "To do it in that venue, in that dramatic way against a Laval team that doesn't lose, it still hasn't really sunk in yet." Jamie Stoyles and Tyler Topham also scored in the shootout for the Jags, who downed Clarkson 5-2 and M.M. Robinson 2-0 in the preliminary round. Tyler Nieuwendyk (2), Topham (2), Hayden Mancini (2), Patrick Gough, Brad Ranson and Conner Mortimer were CtK's tournament goal scorers, with goalie Dean Dimou had all three wins. The Jaguars blanked Holy Trinity 5-0 in the Halton league season opener last week. Georgetown Rebels couldn't build any momentum and were eliminated from the provincial AAAA senior boys' championships in Hamilton this past week after three straight match defeats. Ranked 15th out of 16 teams that qualified for the event, the Rebels lost to eventual gold-medalist St. Michael's College of Toronto 13-25, 18-25 and 23-25, 2025 to fifth-seeded Forest Heights of Kitchener on the opening day of action and then were knocked out with an 18-25, 18-25 defeat to R.H. King of Toronto on Friday. CORRECTION: In last Thursday's Independent & Free Press, it was reported that Christ the King's junior Jaguars lost in last year's Halton Tier III championship game, when in fact they defeated Iroquois Ridge 21-6. One streak ends, another starts for Raiders Having had their five-game Ontario Junior Hockey League winning streak snapped by the Buffalo Jr. Sabres on the weekend, the Georgetown Raiders promptly started up another one and have now taken six of their past seven starts. The 18-8-1 Raiders dropped a 4-2 decision to the visiting Jr. Sabres Saturday night, yet despite a short turnaround and long bus trip, were able to skate past the Otters in Huntsville 3-1 Sunday afternoon. Always seeming to have trouble at home against Buffalo, Georgetown looked strong early on, grabbing a 2-0 first-period lead on goals by Patrick Megannety and Brendan Woods that chased starting Jr. Sabre goalie Curran McNamara, but replacement Parker Gahagen blocked all 35 shots he faced to earn first-star honours. On Sunday, Matt Chiarantano broke up a 1-1 tie with six minutes left in the third period to clinch the victory over Huntsville, but the veteran Raider defender will be out of the lineup for the next two games after receiving a misconduct near the conclusion of the contest. Newcomer Nick Perruccio and Megannety also tallied for the Raiders, who outshot the hosts 40-29. The 19-year-old Perruccio, a 6-foot, 185pound forward from Richmond Hill, was acquired from the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots for 16-year-old defender Luke Shiplo last week. Perruccio led the Patriots in scoring with 18 goals and 10 assists in 24 games. This week, the Raiders will visit Brampton Volleyball Thursday night before hosting the Oakville Facing the tournament's top Blades Saturday at the Alcott Arena at 7:30 p.m. A trip to Burlington follows Sunday afternoon. seed in the preliminary round, the GEORGETOWN JR.
