8 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,December 6, 2011 SPORTS & LEISURE Raiders' D proving Grinch-like Squad takes over top spot in West Division after impressive wins With Christmas fast-approaching, the Georgetown Raiders have gone into Grinch mode during their current four-game winning streak, allowing just three goals against during that span. And the Raiders have surpassed their rivals from Oakville for first place in the Ontario Junior Hockey League's West Division, leading by three points after posting an impressive 4-1 victory over the visiting Blades Saturday evening, followed by a 6-1 rout of the Cougars in Burlington Sunday afternoon. Georgetown has won nine of its last 10 starts and although the Blades hold four games in hand on their Halton rivals, the Raiders have taken three of the four meetings between the two this season. Veteran netminder Steve Racine made his debut for the Raiders last week and was in a stingy mood, blanking the Brampton Capitals 5-0 on Thursday before blocking 24 of 25 shots directed at him by the Blades Saturday. Racine, a 20-year-old from the Buffalo area, had been with the Westside Warriors of the BCHL this season and prior to that played for Waterloo and Chicago of the USHL. Rookie goalie Michael Giugovaz also continues his strong play, improving his record to 16-4-0 with a 2.21 GAA after the triumph over the Cougars. Patrick Megannety had three goals Sunday, with Brendan Woods (2) and Ryan Lopes rounding out the scoring. Megannety, an Oakville resident, scored the winner early in the third period against the Blades and was named first star, with Stephen Genua, Manny Gialedakis and Lopes adding singles. Tyson Fawcett notched a third-period natural hat trick Thursday as the Raiders fired 45 pucks at the Brampton goal. Nick Perruccio and Jacob Bauchman also tallied for Georgetown. The Raiders play just once this week, hosting the 15-7-5 Stouffville Spirit Saturday at the Alcott Arena beginning at 7:30 p.m. The St. Brigid Bears became the first boys' team from North Halton to win the Halton Catholic District School Board volleyball championship after coming back to defeat St. Andrew of Oakville in the final match held recently at Assumption in Burlington. The Bears dropped the first game 25-17 and were losing 7-1 in the second set before rallying to win 25-20 and 15-10 in the tiebreaker. St. Brigid's, which went undefeated in league play, won their own tournament and another at Christ the King, also finishing as runners-up in the provincewide Catholic Cup. Richmond Hill defeated Georgetown's Christ the King 70-43 in the final. The Jaguars posted wins of 47-36 against Orangeville's Westside and 41-38 over Brampton's Cardinal Leger. GDHS's seniors went on to beat Leger 60-29 in the third-place game, while Aldershot downed Peterborough 44-32 for the consolation championship. Photo by Eamonn Maher Egg Nog Jog run set for Sunday The 29th-annual Egg Nog Jog is set for Sunday, Dec. 11 beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Terra Cotta Conservation Area. Hosted and organized by the Georgetown Runners, the 10.8-km feature race is a perennial favourite that is filled to capacity again this year. There is also a One Mile Smile race for youths 12 & under that is free to enter.
