16 The IFP · Halton Hills, Thursday, March 1, 2012 SPORTS & LEISURE By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer Even though she won't find out until late May whether she'll represent Canada in rowing at the Summer Olympics in London, England, Georgetown's Cristy Nurse was recently featured amongst some of the world's top athletes. The 25-year-old University of Ottawa law student was included in Sportsnet Magazine's 30 Most Beautiful Athletes on the Planet in its March 12 Issue alongside tennis superstars Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova, Olympic gold medal sprinter Usain Bolt, phenom golfer Michelle Wie and three-time Super Bowl QB Tom Brady of the New England Patriots. The 5-foot-11 Nurse said she was reluctant at first to be included in the photo shoot, feeling that it might affect her standing as a member of Canada's women's 8s rowing team, which earned silver medals at both the 2010 World Rowing Championships and the 2011 World Rowing Cup. "My initial reaction when I was approached about the article was apprehension, because at this point I am still in selection and have not been named to the Olympic team, so I was hesitant to appear to my teammates as courting media attention," said Nurse, who is currently in Florida with the national team for a training camp. "(But) after discussing it with Rowing Canada's communications' rep and my coach, who were both supportive, I decided it would be a fun experience. I had a great time with shooting for the issue, so in the end I'm very happy I did it. Ulti- Among Sportsnet Magazine's 30 Most Beautiful Nurse joins exclusive club for magazine photo shoot mately I hope the photo helps bring some attention to rowing leading into the summer Games, because we have a very strong team on both the men and women's sides, who deserve the coverage." All's Wel in Terra Cotta Who said that winter took a pass on Halton Hills this year? Jim Kavanagh (left) and Brad Bollert played some shinny earlier this week on the backyard rink at the Welburn residence in Terra Cotta. The Georgetown Goodtimers' hockey team and Dave's Service Centre recently held the inaugural Welly Cup 3-on-3 tournament, with the team of Pete Gainey, Jeff Orr and Loafy Hoogendam prevailing in the championship game. Photo by Eamonn Maher CRISTY NURSE The Georgetown District High School graduate said it was more of a gag idea to wear a wolf pelt for the Sportsnet shoot along with a bathing suit, but ultimately that's what the editors chose. "We had shot a few other bathing suits, and early in the shoot the crew had been joking about the wolf pelt, which was hanging in the studio, saying, `We gotta get that thing in a picture,'" Nurse said via e-mail. "So, once we had taken all the `serious' shots, they threw that on me and we were just playing around with it. I guess what started out as a joke turned into the stronger photo and they decided to run it!" "We just didn't want to be like the (New England) Patriots," joked Rebel coach Andrew Costley, referring to the NFL team that didn't lose all season until dropping the 2008 Super Bowl to the N.Y. Giants. Costley was relieved after GDHS prevailed 23-25, 25-18, 15-11 for their first Halton title since 2008. Prior to that, the Rebels had captured nine of 11 HSSAA junior championship banners. Along with their 12-0 regular season mark, the Rebels won tournaments at Christ the King and Milton District before sweeping Oakville-Trafalgar in the league semifinals, losing just five sets all season without a match defeat. In last Thursday's tiebreaking third set at Sheridan College, the junior Rebels went on the attack, with the setting skills of Bailey Davis and Jacqueline Tanguay proving to be too much for the Lords, who had knocked Georgetown out in last year's semis. "Some of these girls are going to go a long way in volleyball because they work hard," added Costley.
