She is a Golden Retriever and, next month, she will be celebrating her 11th birthday. That's pretty old in dog years. But when it comes to this particular dog, age doesn't necessarily bring wisdom. Just last month, my old, semi-arthritic dog jumped up on the kitchen counter, reached back into the deep, dark recesses and pulled a paper plate containing my brother's leftover birthday cake to the edge. She then proceeded to knock the cake onto the ground, leaving the plate on the counter, and devour the remaining orange pop-flavoured cake. That alone wouldn't really be such a big deal. When she was a puppy, she ate half of a cake mere hours before my youngest brother's birthday party. But a few things were different this time: 1) She is much, much older and should know better. 2) The cake was pushed waaaay back on the counter where she (theoretically) shouldn't have been able to reach it. And 3) she decided to pair the cake with a side of candle, eating the big 4 candle that was stuck in the top of the cake...but not the 2 candle that was beside it. I guess a moderate serving of dyed wax really brings out the subtle flavour of orange pop cake. So when they say you can't teach an old dog new tricks, they're probably right: old dogs seem to think them up all on their own. But that's enough about my sugared-up dog. Let's get to the matter at hand: this jam-packed edition of In Focus. In these pages, you will find dozens of photos from around town, including the first ever Acton Winter Carnival, the Halton Hills Chamber of Commerce's Taste of the Chamber and much, much more. So sit back, relax and catch up on what your friends, family and neighbours have been up to this month. Happy March!
