SHOPLOCAL SHOP SMART... SHOP HALTON HILLS PEOPLE IN BUSINESS Adina Ingram (Halton Hills Mompreneurs) Halton Hills Mompreneurs, a chapter of the Ontario Mompreneurs Group, exhibits the creative talents of local women who balance the stresses of running a business with the time consuming duties of motherhood. Holding their inaugural showcase last November, the community spoke loud and clear that such a community-based event is what Halton Hills needs to bring business and fun together under one roof. Holding monthly meetings, members meet, mingle and network with other like-minded business owners while learning more about running their own businesses. With the growing number of members, local mompreneurs have stepped up and are now hosting these events for others to come together and learn from one another. "The success of our first showcase and sold out status for our upcoming Spring Showcase on March 31st is a great testament to our efforts. We are becoming known in the community and this will only benefit our mom-run businesses; helping them make a mark in the community," says chapter owner Adina Ingram, a longtime Halton Hills resident. "We share our successes and shortfalls of business owners, with the philosophy of growing our brand, client-base and awareness of what we have to offer." We will see you out on March 31st at Christ the King from 10 to 3 for our second showcase. Special guest FRANKIE FLOWERS! Mark is the operations manager of Bennett's Waste Disposal Inc., a business he and his dad, Colin, started in 1991. The business offers waste pickup for rural Halton Hills residents who don't get town pickup, as well as residential bin service. Whether the customer needs a bin temporarily for a home renovation or long-term for their business, Bennett's Waste Disposal can help. Over the last few years, an increasing number of commercial enterprises have been opting to use Bennett's Waste Disposal's bin services as well. Mark's business is truly a family affair: in addition to his father, he also works with his mother, sister and wife. "Working with my family is fantastic. I wouldn't want it any other way," Mark says. "People think we get on each other's nerves, but we really don't. We work together all day and we still get together on weekends for barbecues and go on vacation together." Mark and his family enjoy getting to know their customers and proving friendly, personalized service. "Of our 350 or so clients, I think my mom knows everybody's name and life story," Mark laughs. "We all like talking to our customers even though it might take longer to do our job. Our motto is 'Your garbage is our bread and butter.'" Traditional Taste Bakery and Café For Kathleen Terencio, baking is a family business. For more than 60 years, members of her family have been involved in the baking business and Kathleen is carrying on the custom as the manager of Traditional Taste Bakery and Café. Traditional Taste sells a variety of fresh-baked European goods like pastries, cakes and breads, as well as custom cakes for weddings and special occasions. Kathleen has taken the traditions her grandparents passed on to her and put a twist on them by offering everything from homemade favourites to fresh original menu items. She put her passion for cooking to the test by introduced new menu items, including a chicken club sandwich with roasted peppers and pesto mayo, a portobello mushroom sandwich with garlic and herb goat cheese, a tasty Moroccan lentil soup and Portuguese caldo verde. Traditional Taste also offers cold salads, quiches and kabobs, as well as vegetarian options and will be offering gluten free products soon. At the end of the day, watching her customers enjoy their food is what keeps Kathleen going. "When a customer comes back and says, 'The cake and pastries were amazing,' or 'lunch was delicious' makes the hard work and long hours all worth it," she says.
