5 Home, Lawn & Garden, Tuesday, April 10, 2012 Timing is everything when fertilizing lawns The timing of your fertilizer application will differ between varieties, so get acquainted with your lawn and identify your grass. All grasses have the ability to go dormant in periods when their water intake is reduced; in the driest parts of the summer and while the ground is frozen throughout the winter. Grass turns brown as the plant focuses energy on the roots. During dormancy, don't fertilize your lawn-- let it rest. As the rain returns or the ground warms up grass will begin to green. In this case green means go - generally spring and fall are the best times to fertilize. Use these timing tips for optimal turf growth, year round: · Early spring: just as the ground thaws your lawn will wake up hungry. Feeding it promptly strengthens roots and provides a healthy foundation for the growing season ahead. · Fall: prep your lawn for its winter nap by applying your final feeding. Fall fertilization strengthens the roots and increases nitrogen storage, ensuring your turf grows back thick and green the following spring. · Don't apply when: the grass is wet, heavy rain is expected soon or if the ground is frozen.
