Teacher says YPI program has impacted his students Continued from pg. 11 "The victims can get therapy sessions too. There are many different kinds of abuse, not just physical and emotional. It can be spiritual or threatening to take someone's child or pet away from them. It's not just men that abuse women. Sometimes, it's women abusing other women." Civics teacher Shawn Brown is in his first year with the YPI program and is impressed with the impact it's had on his students. He noted that it's actually difficult to find a viable grassroots charity based in this area because of the YPI organization's specific guidelines about what community groups it will recognize. "Part of what the foundation wants the students to do is to actually visit the charity and I think it's probably one of the more practical projects you might do in high school because God forbid, you or someone you know might be a victim to something like (domestic violence)," Brown said. "The kids know that there's an Acton Foodshare, but where is it? Just visiting the charity is really eye-opening for a lot of the students, like the Darling Home For Kids in Milton. They say, `Wow, this exists in our community?' These are charities that are five minutes from our school." All three girls said that they would like to volunteer at Halton Women's Place when they turn 18 and added that if they win the $5,000 first prize, the money would go to the shelter's children's programs, which aren't government-funded. Any local-area grassroots charities that are interested in becoming involved in the YPI project next year at ADHS can call Shawn Brown at 519853-2920 or email brownsh@hdsb. ca. 15 The IFP · Halton Hills, Thursday, April 26, 2012 EARTH WEEK CELEBRATION 2012 Sunday, April 22, 2012, will mark the 42nd, Anniversary of Earth Day.
