By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer Asbestos uncovered during renovation of the Kindergarten classroom at Joseph Gibbons Public School is being dealt with according to Halton District School Board guidelines and doesn't pose a health threat to students says a Board superintendent. Gerry Cullen Superintendent of Facilities Services said the asbestos (Type 3) was uncovered in insulation in the walls of the classroom during the renovation work for full-day Junior Kindergarten and its not uncommon to find asbestos during such work in schools that were built pre-1980s. Asbestos found in school Cullen said asbestos can often be found in floor tiles, ceiling tiles and some insulation. "The concern is if it become airborne," said Cullen. In an email sent to the parents the school said when the asbestos was encountered a couple of weeks ago the work ceased, the area was sealed off immediately and the asbestos abatement team was called in to investigate. A containment area around was built and the specialists removed the asbestos Saturday said Cullen. Air quality was tested at the site Sunday, and the school passed, indicating its safe for staff and students. The results were posted at the school.
