12 ·The IFP· Halton Hills ·Thursday, May 24, 2012 Medals honour Queen, citizens This year marks the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada. This Diamond Jubilee year provides Canadians with the opportunity to reflect on Queen Elizabeth II's reign and how much Canada has accomplished over the last 60 years. Under her reign, Canada has undergone important nationbuilding transformations. On February 15, 1965, following a royal proclamation signed by Her Majesty, our iconic red and white maple leaf flag was raised for the first time on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. In 1982, Queen Elizabeth signed a royal proclamation that patriated our Constitution from the United Kingdom. This historic event reaffirmed the position of constitutional monarchy in Canada. To celebrate the Queen's milestone, nation-wide events are being held to commemorate our constitutional monarchy, the role of the Crown in Canada, and our system of government. This week, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall visited cities across Canada. The Prince of Wales has also launched a new Canadian charitable initiative at www.princescharities.ca. In addition, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal was created to give Canadians a way to honour the achievements of their fellow Canadians, while honouring The Queen's service to Canada. A number of partner organizations were selected to nominate candidates in order to Michael Chong ensure that medals will be awarded in an inclusive manner and on a national scale. Partner organizations include Members of Parliament, senators, lieutenant governors, territorial commissioners, provincial and territorial premiers and some national organizations. Each partner organization has a limited number of nominations for a Diamond Jubilee Medal. Individuals who would like to suggest nominees deserving of a medal, are encouraged to contact my office by June 1. As we rapidly approach Canada's 150th anniversary as a nation in 2017, we can take this Diamond Jubilee year to reflect on Canada's rich historical roots, as well as the potential and prosperity that lay ahead for our great country. It is also a chance for us to reflect on the long reign of a remarkable woman, who as Canada's head of state, has worked with 11 Canadian prime ministers. God Save the Queen.
