IN MEMORIAMS In loving memory of HHAAC goes on the road Halton Hills Accessibility Advisory Committee (HHAAC) meets once a month. Meetings are informative and sometimes include a presentation highlighting a new initiative from municipal departments, or in response to questions and concerns we've raised regarding programs or services. The issues can be serious and even life-threatening if not addressed. Our meetings sometimes include a healthy dose of laughter. We especially enjoy an opportunity to take our show "on the road", literally. That is exactly what we did in May, combining a serious traffic/ pedestrian safety issue, a town official, a practical demonstration of new equipment, some laughter and, most important, a break for cookies. Yum! Our first stop was a new traffic circle in Georgetown South at Danby Road and Barber Drive. Joining us was Mr. Matthew Roj, Town Traffic Co-ordinator. Together, the committee inspected the circle's physical infrastructure including speed limits, signage, pedestrian crossings, and physical indicators for the Vision Impaired. We praised efforts, noted deficiencies, and suggested alternatives. You are always remembered and your time with us treasured. We mention your name and speak of you often. It only seems like yesterday that you were here. It broke our hearts to lose you, and though we cannot see you, you will remain in our hearts forever. Love: Heather, Jess, Meliss, and Ryan crossing the street. "Easy!" Matt said. Barb suggested Mat try crossing with closed eyes using her cane. We all had a good chuckle watching Matt do this. Not as easy as it looks. Matt thought it was a good experience to put himself in the shoes of a blind person crossing roundabouts. At the Gellert Centre, while we munched on cookies, Joanne Wilson, Facility Supervisor and Heather Morris Stokes, Acting Recreation Coordinator-Aquatics, provided a demonstration of their adjustable change table for mobility impaired swimmers. The changing surface is 1.5" foam, 60" x 25" with motorized adjustable heights from 19" to 38" to aid transition from wheelchair to table and back again. Two folding side bars and wheel locks add to safety. We extend our sincere thanks to Matt, Joanne and Heather. This is the concept of the Georgetown Cruise Night car show, running from mid-May to the end of September, organized by dedicated car people with the help of business owners in and around Georgetown. Starting in 2000 at Halton Hills Tire, the late Scott Moore started the Cruise Night and shortly after Lee Martin, Mike and Lynne Boyd joined to help organize the event. Due to overwhelming participation it was decided to move the Cruise in 2002 to a larger location near the Boston Pizza, enjoying eight seasons at that location. The last two Cruise seasons were located at the Georgetown Market Place. In its 12th season, the Cruise moves to new location at Nashville North, 530 Guelph St. The Cruise starts at 5 p.m. when classic cars of every make and description begin rolling into the parking lot. Upon entry to the Cruise the classic car owners are welcomed by Lynne and Mike Boyd and presented a door prize ticket with a chance to take home a gift from many of the local business sponsors. During the evening until 9 p.m., car owners and spectators listen to great oldies cruise tunes. The big winner at the end of each evening is the Georgetown Hospital Foundation, with over $2,500 being donated annually for the past 11 years. As both car owners and spectator admission is free, the organizers are grateful for funds raised through the 50/50 draws and sponsor contributions.
