Strachan named new trustee Continued from pg. 1 "I am excited at the possibility of working with like-minded, caring individuals who focus their knowledge and energies on creating a culture that prepares our children for the future," says Strachan. "I believe in good decision-making processes and have an extensive understanding of governance and meeting procedures which I think will assist me to land running in this role." Strachan brings to the role of trustee a strong community involvement and background within Halton Hills, most recently chairing the Georgetown Field of Dreams Committee, partnering the community with Georgetown District High School for field and track upgrades. She has extensive prior involvement with the Board, serving on committees dealing with the student code of conduct, school effectiveness surveys, accommodation, accessibility, and the original Parent Involvement Committee. She has also served multiple terms on school councils for Stewarttown, Limehouse and Georgetown District High School. The offer of appointment follows a month-long course of action that outlined a Board-approved application and validation process, interviews with qualified candidates, and the potential for a second round of interviews if required. This process follows the provision for appointment outlined under the Ontario Education Act , and the Municipal Elections Act , and echoes the strategies used in the four previous appointments to fill mid-term trustee vacancies within the Board. All 30 applications received for the position were validated for the required qualifications (including Canadian citizen, over the age of 18, a Halton resident and public school supporter), and qualified applicants were invited to an interview where the same questions were posed to all candidates. In consideration of an interview process that was fair to all candidates, the questions were not publicized in advance of the interviews, nor were the interviews conducted in public. Candidates were asked to comment on the following: · What is the most significant challenge or opportunity facing public education and how should the Halton District School Board prepare for it? · Please tell us about your most significant personal contribution to the Halton District School Board and how you would apply this experience as a member of the Board. · What makes you stand out as the best choice to effectively represent the Halton Hills community as its Trustee?
