Trustees approved the operating budget for the 2012-13 school year at last Wednesday's board meeting. The board also approved a $48 million capital budget for the same school year. Before the vote was cast, Lucy Veerman, superintendent of business services and treasurer, told trustees the budget is compliant with Ministry of Education parameters. Due to increased enrolment, the budget has risen 3.9 per cent over the previous year. The new budget has cut the contracts of two support staff positions for the school board: the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) co-ordinator and the aboriginal liaison officer. Trustees heard from five delegates asking them to continue the contracts of these two positions. Among the delegates was Nicole Chapman, from Halton Women's Place who was calling on trustees to keep both positions in the coming school year. She said the root of much bullying that takes place in schools is society's conception of what it means to be a man or a woman. "Those who differ in appearance and attitude from the media-fueled images of masculinity and femininity often face the brunt of society's criticism and intolerance. It is these same gender stereotypes See HALTON, pg. 5 The Canadian women's cycling team was announced Thursday in Quebec. Denise Kelly of Glen Williams learned several months ago that she will be the head coach of the Canadian women's road cycling team at the Summer Games and was in Quebec last week for the team selection announcement. "The Olympics is the pinnacle for women's cycling and although they do race professionally, the way they approach this is definitely different," said Kelly, 52, a member of the national road team until her retirement in 1991. "There's a buildup and excitement you don't see in other years. I've been to the Pan-Ams before, but this is another level. The bottom line is that it's a bike race, but not just another bike race. There's absolutely something special there." Thursday, Rowing Canada is scheduled to officially announce the team members who will wear the red and white at the Games, including the women's 8s boat that the 25-year-old Nurse has raced in for the past two years. Canada qualified for the Olympics in women's 8s last year and all that remains is to name the final roster of those who'll be rowing in London. The team recently returned to its home base in London, Ont. after three weeks of training in Italy.
