Arnott seeks (and gets) 4-3 assurance Wellington Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott has been pushing to get the cancellation of Alternative 4-3 by Transportation Minister Bob Chiarelli in writing, and it looks like it's coming. Last Wednesday was the last day the House was sitting before summer recess and Arnott spoke to Chiarelli about his earlier request for written confirmation and received a note back from the minister indicating his staff was preparing a letter putting the commitment in writing to be sent to Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette. Bonnette received verbal assurance from Chiarelli May 16 that the Ministry wouldn't support the 4-3 option in the GTA West Corridor study-- a proposed new east-west highway that would slice through rural Halton Hills south of Georgetown-- and would recommend widening Hwy. 401 instead. But that wasn't good enough for Arnott. "In my experience, cabinets often get shuffled over the summer," said Arnott. "If Mr. Chiarelli is assigned to another ministry and we don't have anything in writing, we could very well find ourselves back at square one." So a week after Bonnette received the news from Chiarelli, Arnott tabled a number of Ordered Paper Questions in the Legislature asking the minister to put the matter to rest through written confirmation or a public statement. Government ministers are obligated to respond in writing within a specified timeframe. Arnott got his answer Wednesday. "I want to once again thank everyone involved," Arnott said. "The Mayor, council and staff of the Town of Halton Hills, the Regional Chair, council, and staff of the Region of Halton, and all the members of CRASHH (Concerned Residents Against Superhighway in Halton Hills) have all worked so hard on this issue. As I said last month in the Ontario Legislature, this victory belongs to them."
