Doborovich wins silver and a scholarship By TED BROWN Staff Writer When Thomas Doborovich was five years old, and began to play the piano, he probably didn't always appreciate the fact his mom Kathy, a teacher in music theory, piano and flute, encouraged him to spend hours practising at the piano. But as the 17-year-old recently brought home a silver medal from the prestigious Ontario Music Festivals Association (OMFA) 2012 Provincial Finals, it was all worth it-- and that's not counting the $400 scholarship that accompanies the medal. The competition, held in Peterborough in mid-June, saw Doborovich representing Peel at his level, in a competition that began with 32 competitors which were eventually reduced to four. it must feel like competing for American Idol," joked Doborovich, "as we had a play-off for the final placing." Winning the silver provincial level is as far as Doborovich can go at this point, since there is no competition for his level at a national level. Doborovich's musical talent is not limited to the piano. In addition to his Grade 10 Theory with the Royal Conservatory of Music, he also plays saxophone. When asked about his postsecondary plans, Doborovich says he will pursue academics, using his music as a means to an end. "It's what I do best, and it's where I have the most potential," said Doborovich. "Music instills a discipline and I can hopefully use that talent as a stepping stone to lead me to other professions."
