Acton Seniors disappointed with council decision By JULIE CONROY Acton Seniors Centre On July 9 members of the Acton and Georgetown Seniors Centre descended "en masse" on the Halton Hills Council Chambers to attend a special meeting re the expansion of the Acton and Georgetown Seniors Centres and Youth Centres. Georgetown Seniors Centre President Rick Chambers made a presentation regarding the needs for expanding both Centres. He was supported by Acton Seniors Centre's President Bev Jones. I was unable to attend, but I understand the council chamber was filled and it was standing room only. The outcome of the meeting (after reading the report prepared by Chief Administrative Officer Dennis Perlin) seems to be that anticipated hope that the expansion of the Acton Arena in 2014-15 have been dashed and it looks as if the expansion of the Acton Seniors Centre has been pushed into the far distance, possibly as late as construction in 2018. The council report did have an alternative plan of looking into the feasibility of buy/lease/partnership alternatives in consultation with the seniors centres. There will be an opportunity for more community engagement over the next few years. Needless to say there were some very disappointed seniors leaving the meeting. President Bev Jones said he would like to thank everyone who took the time to attend the meeting and show support for the expansion of the Acton Seniors Centre. Two ladies volunteered to help with the Friday lunches but it would be ideal if there were two teams that could alternate and cover for holidays, etc. The Friday lunches followed by Bingo are now being served in our room for the summer due to the children's summer programs in the Community Hall. It was nice to see Lennora McKinnon (who moved from Acton to Fergus a number of years ago) join 15 other canasta players last Thursday. They were enjoying a break from the heat. In the afternoon playing bid euchre, Mary Irwin had the only mooner. Doreen Gibb was happy to win the weekly 50/50. She won $118. Ruth Burke gave me the list of winners for the Rama trip on Wednesday, June 27. Celebrating birthdays were Grant Greenaway and Tony Calluci. In the lucky seats were Marg Gouge, Karen Brozic, Eleanor Hughson and Art Tressel. The 50/50 winner as Rose Morrison. To help pass the time while travelling on the bus, they are now playing bingo. Winners were Claire Landry, Eleanor Hughson, Pauline Barlow, Gerry Chafe and Marie Richardson.
