6 ·The IFP· Halton Hills ·Thursday, August 2, 2012 OPINION Good to GO Good things come to those who wait and goodness knows the citizens of Acton have waited long enough for GO train service. Their wait if finally over. Last week Metrolinx, the somewhat monolithic government agency whose mission is to "champion, develop and implement an integrated transportation system for our region that enhances prosperity, sustainability and quality of life," announced a land lease agreement had been reached with the Town of Halton Hills to build a new station near The Hide House. "We are pleased to bring GO rail service to Acton and provide additional options for travellers in this very busy corridor," said Gary McNeil, GO Transit President. "With the addition of this new station, we are making it easier for residents to choose to leave their cars at home and use GO Transit." For Acton residents it restores a train service that was removed nearly 20 years ago. The Acton GO Station will be served by two morning and two evening trips on GO's Kitchener line. Schedules will be available at gotransit.com later this year. The new station is all part of Metrolinx's The Big Move, a 25-year multi-billion dollar regional transportation plan designed to keep Ontarians on the move. Securing agreements for parking proved to be a process that took much longer than anticipated, and while some may not be happy with the end result, the bottom line is Acton is now serviced with a GO train and commuting will be made easier because of it. We're sure many who will use the service will agree it was worth the wait. 905-873-0301 Publisher: Ken Nugent General manager: Steve Foreman (sforeman@theifp.ca) Retail advertising manager: Cindi Campbell (ccampbell@theifp.ca) Managing editor: John McGhie (jmcghie@theifp.ca) Distribution manager: Nancy Geissler (ngeissler@theifp.ca) Classifieds Kristie Pells (classified@theifp.ca) Accounting Rose Marie Gauthier Editorial Cynthia Gamble: News editor (cgamble@theifp.ca) Ted Brown: Photography (tbrown@theifp.ca) Lisa Tallyn: Staff writer (ltallyn@theifp.ca) Eamonn Maher: Staff writer/sports (emaher@theifp.ca) Letters policy Letters must include an address and daytime phone number. Letters to the editor Local ALS Walk impresses CEO Dear editor, I'd like to congratulate the Acton/Georgetown WALK for ALS, held on June 2. It was my first time attending this Walk and I want to congratulate everyone involved for the incredible success of this event. The amazing outpouring of community support was shown through more than 800 walkers, a lot of teams (including our client teams: Murray Machine and Sutherland Supporters), and a phenomenal Walk committee who donated their time to organizing this event. Because of this support, the Acton/Georgetown WALK has grown to be one of the biggest in Canada. At the Walk, Mayor Rick Bonnette spoke, Paul Ivany emceed, and there was entertainment by juggler Craig Douglas, the band Rock 40 and an incredible singer, Darrelle London. The Kinsmen Club donated the hotdogs and served up food for participants. Special thanks to Domino's Pizza, along with all of the other food donations-- there was certainly food for all. There were more than 50 local corporate sponsors who had signs along the route path and a huge silent auction with more than 100 donated items, all from very generous local businesses. For a walk that only started a few years ago, I am amazed at your community who came together to make this event the success it is! Together, more than $160,000 was raised so far at this year's Walk and a total in excess of $750,000 in the four years since its inception all to support people living with ALS, a paralyzing neuromuscular disease. You can still donate at www.walkforals.ca until the end of the year. Thank you to everybody involved in the Acton/Georgetown WALK for ALS-- this shows what can be done when generous, motivated people come together to support a worthy cause! I look forward to the 2013 Walk! Lindee David, CEO, ALS Canada ers, Crosswinds Golf and Country Club, and of course our invaluable volunteers. Thank you doesn't seem quite enough for everyone involved who generously gave of their time and those who obtained sponsors for the tournament and those who donated prizes to ensure that every golfer walked away with a gift. There are so many worthwhile events going on in Halton that we are truly grateful to everyone who supported us. Because of the contributions of so many wonderful people, we are thrilled to say that we have raised $18,200 for the Halton MS Chapter. As we do not receive any government funding or United Way assistance, our fundraising efforts are instrumental in being able to provide the supports and services that we do to our many members and their families with or affected by Multiple Sclerosis across Halton. A heartfelt thank you to the golf committee members who volunteer their time, work tirelessly and will be back at it in August planning for 2013.
